i've been a cutter for awhile now. i'm not ready to give it up but realize that i can't do it forever. probably for the past few years i have had an urge to go through one of my veins in my wrist. not with a blade. just a pin. i don't want to commit suicide. but, it's hard to explain other than calling it an urge. so, my question is to other people who self harm. have you ever felt this? or is this unusually for people who deals with ths problem?

i know it's bad for me. i know, i shouldn't want to feel the blade on my skin or see my blood. but, sometimes it's the only thing that gives me satisfaction in this life. i don't do it for attention. all my scars and cuts are hidden from view. i have carried this for a long time. yes, i'm ashamed. i want to go through my vein so bad. i'm just at a point why i think why does it even matter. what's another cut?

Its common to push things further and further. After a while, you get used to a particular type of injury, and cutting doesn't produce the same result anymore, so things start to escalate. Escalation is scary because there really isn't any limit.
A lot of times, escalation is what gets people to stop because they get to the point where they can't push it any further without risking their lives. Be careful.

Your urge is "normal" in a very unnormal community. Cutters don't want to kill themselves, they want to feel pain, and know that they actually still can feel. It's a form of self control in a world the cutter sees as unpredictable or bad. Cutting is a way to alleviate numbness.
Get to the doctor now. It's difficult to give up, but you can find a way to resist the urge with help.
Good luck.

I have been a cutter off and on for 20+ years, my last time was late last summer. I gashed open my left inner arm, and I purposely did not get rid of the scar. It's my reminder to never ever do that again.
You need help. Self Injury may help us feel better, but it doesn't solve a thing. It's better to get care for your problems, than to spend life so messed up.

The best advise I can offer is to get professional help to sort out the feelings, thoughts & emotions behind the desire to cut.
There are so many people who do other self destructive things if the problems behind the cutting isn't stopped. Don't just switch addictions.
Be kind to yourself & forgive yourself. No on is perfect.
Good luck!

it's a very delicate argument.
i don't know how much internet would help you with this.
but i definately can tell you that yes,.. it feels like an alcoholic in front of a bottle....
and that's why, it's an "addiction".
And as any other addiction... you need to get out of it, or it will just get worse and worse.
Don't be afraid to ask for help.
Believe it or not... that's the only way to do it.

Its clear to me that you are depressed about yourself or the circumstances you're in. You need to find a way to attain peace. Its that simple. I've found that the quickest way to overcome depression is to learn to DETACH. Don't care anymore. To LET GO. When you realize that nothing really matters in this world, you won't have the negative emotions of depression, hatred, anger, or fear. Nothing can affect you emotionally, it has no more power over you. If you want to stop this problem, detach and let go. Say to yourself that nothing matters and you'll be feeling better in no time.

I used to cut... I cut a knife right through my vien... it wasn't major, but I was hosbitalized for 1 week. What it all comes down to is self abuse. DO NOT do it. I did it, and look how things came out for me? I recently stopped, and I still have scares all over my body. It's not the way to take your anger out. It never turnes out good. So you choose- saftey, or hosbitilization-maybe even death. The answer is pretty damn obious.

This article explains some stuff and also has resources for when you want to get help. I urge you to do so soon. In the meantime, this does explain some of the "norms" and psychology behind it.
