Experience has taught me to wait and buy from a really good breeder. I have never and would never buy from a pet shop.
Since getting my beautiful Great Dane pup from our breeder I have understood even more how much those poor pet shop pups are screwed up (or missing out) developmentally or socially. In the short 8 weeks that my pup spent with her mom, other pups, and her breeder she went through so many critical learning stages. She continued to go through critical learning stages in her first few weeks and months with us. I'm glad we had our breeder to tell us about them and help us make sure our dog had great experiences.
We bought for the same reasons you want to. We have not been disappointed and my expectations for my dog have been exceeded. She is almost two now and she is shaping up nicely into my dream dog. We love our puppy.
Another person brought up a good point that I am passionate about. A fabulous breeder may not breed show dogs but have the best working stock (non competition but healthy and bred to do a job well). They're all good just find the best breeder with the best knowledge and track record.
Just for interest I also included a link to our breeders website. Pretty pics. He is the type of breeder you want to find.

If I were going to buy a dog I would become real good friends of a competent breeder. I would watch all the dogs they have & request a specific breeding of the two dogs I liked best. I know what I would want & I wouldn't settle for less.
I wouldn't waste my money on some of these so called AKC registered pups that show up in newspaper ads (some exceptions), back yard breeders, puppy mills or rescue places or pet shops.
If I am going to spend a few thousand dollars on a dog it will be exactly what I want. I would pick the sire & the dame & discuss the pros & cons with the breeder.
I can not see my self doing this. First off, I don't have that kind of money. Second, I have rescued dogs all my life. Oh, I have had a few pure breeds but they were just pet quality. Two Great Danes (Boxcar & JJ (just jimmy)), three Dobermans (Kelly, Rex, & Mona), two Airedales (Sarah & Molly), German Shepherd (Sadie). All the rest were just mutts I either found on the streets, some that were just given to me by rescue places (temperament problems) because of my back ground, & some that other people found & just brought them to me. 30 or more in all.
It is one of my dreams to own a quality pure bred female Doberman with German back ground. It's a good thing that this is a dreamers world. LOL
I will settle for my crazy mutts cause that is what Spirit has sent me. But I will continue to dream.

People buy pet store puppies on impulse. They cannot wait any time for a puppy to become available from a breeder.
Or they see a cute little puppy in the window and fall in love.
Or they want a birthday present, valentines gift, or christmas present.
Or they did not research so they just go and buy a puppy not knowing anything about dogs.
I am willing to wait on a dog I want. I have been waiting 3 years for my dream black and tan pomeranian and still haven't found the one I want with the pedigree I want, with the qualities I want. Females are hard to come by.
Males are common but, females are hard to find.

I would definately wait for a dog from a responsible, knowledgeable breeder and never recommend or purchase from a pet store as those are poor quality, puppy mill bred dogs. If you want a good Mastiff, find several good breeders to help teach you about the breed - they have, like all canines, health issues that you need to be aware of as well as temperament and structural issues... pet store/puppy mill/back yard greeder dogs are not bred with any of these things considered or even known about. Mastiffs are not a long-lived breed to begin with but if you have one that is crippled at six months or unstable or whatever, it makes even the short time you have them seem like an eternity of suffering for both you and the dog. Show quality doesn't necessarily bring with it responsible as far as breeders go -- I know Mastiffs fairly well -- used to show several and they can be wonderful dogs to live with but not everyone breeding for show quality is also knowledgeable or concerned about the health and temperament issues that can arise -- please don't support through purchase a pet store - no responsible breeder would allow their dogs to be sold via a pet store, ever. I have waited months as well as years for the right dog and I have people that are waiting and have waited months and years for dogs from me -- and many others who will never be on my list of prospective homes. Know you have to be a responsible, knowledgeable purchaser as well as the breeder be responsible and knowledgeable about their breed. Good luck! Hope ya have a lot of hand towels :) They sell big globs of them at Sam's club!! haha
add: Going for 'working' lines is just as silly as going for 'show lines' -- you are going for a DOG - a complete dog and to think that just because someone can train and title one or both of the parents or the ancestors to a sport title means anything more than having a champion or two behind a dog is just silly, ignorant consideration. A dog should have been bred with ALL aspects being knowledgeably given consideration, health (not just cursory or mandated minimum testing but knowledge as to the background and genetic health considered), temperament (not just whether they can be trained to be a sport dog but capable of being a good companion and not requiring 'special' handling along the way to make it possible for the dog to be sport titled), and structure/breed type -- otherwise get a mean mutt and train it to bite a sleeve and voile, you got 'working lines' :) People are so silly sometimes! haha

even though puppies in a pet store look so pit a full in the cages and I would love to take them all home I probably get it cheaper from a breeder from an ad in the paper then at the pet store so I would wait and get from respectable breeder

I will respect your wishes, and not lecture you about animal shelter dogs...LOL
If that is what you want, I would wait. Personally, I never understood why people buy these high priced dogs out of pet stores either. Many times, the pet store does not research the bloodline.

I would prefer to wait for a dog from a responsible breeder (and did) than get a poorly breed dog from a pet shop or a backyard breeder right now.

No respected breeder breeds mutts, it truly is a BYB/PM..unfavorable canines will probably finally end up in the pound because of the fact he won't be waiting to housebreak it or have the money for the vet charges. a great style of small canines in shelters right here, one shelters constantly has 4-6 Chihuahuas, some TFT or Rat Terriers, numerous JRT, Bichon, Poodles and different small canines plus small mutts much less costly and all vetted.

I was lucky. I didn't wait for long to get my show prospect. I'd rather wait instead to buy an instant one from pet stores. It's not time or money, it's quality of puppies from reputable breeders.

I would never buy a puppy from a pet store because they get their dogs from puppy mill and backyard breeders. I would just get one from the shelter. (20% of dogs in shelters are purebreds)
