An adjudication is a decision on some issue of law -- whether it is a motion, a lawsuit, an application for injunction, or whatever -- and to obtain an ajudication, you (or your attorney) first need to appear before the court -- which means having a pending case -- usually by filing a lawsuit.

From there, it matters what you are seeking -- since the procedures are very different for different types of things.
