If he is US military then he is going to be looking at a court martial, prison time then a dishonorable discharge.
And no sympathy from anybody.

In the British Army, if he was under notice for Iraq, he is more likely to be charged with Desertion than just AWOL. This could mean a much more substantial punishment. If he ever gets to return to his unit, he may well be ostracised by his fellows who have actually been covering his duties.

Desertion in time of war is still punishable by death but it rarely happens. Instead he will most likely be charged with missing movement, desertion, ucmj charges and sent to jail -possibly the big house to whit the disciplinary barracks at Leavenworth. This is not something to take lightly or play around with! Whoever "he" is he needs to remember that "he" signed on the dotted line and is accountable for his actions.

Depending on how long ago he went UA, there is a possibility of a federal deserter warrant out on him. That means if he is stopped by the police, etc they can arrest him for being UA from the military. He can stop his UA at any time by returning to a military installation and telling them that he was UA, but he will face sanctions from the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).
If he misses his unit's deployment, he can be charged with "missing movement" in addition to "unauthorized absence".

Eventually he will be picked up for a traffic ticket and turned over to the military. He will be tried under UCMJ for desertion, missing movement, AWOL and a host of other crimes, and lesser associated crimes. He will be found guilty and he will go to jail. He will then carry a federal conviction with him for the rest of his life.
Makes you wonder if you ought to convince your "friend" to get his butt back to his unit before they deploy.

Desertion during a time of war..bad idea. Since they decided to be a chickenshit they will probably be up from some good ol UCMJ action, most likely some jail time. Perhaps even a dishonerable discharge.
