I am a permanent resident in the US and will be eligible to apply for citizen ship in 2 years. Before, I was told by my lawyer that it is required for US permanent residents to stay in the country for a certain amount of time per year.
I am now interested in transferring to University of British Columbia Vancouver next year and I am wondering if I transfer there on a Student Visa will that effect my Citizen ship in the US?

The short answer is yes. Anything more than six months is likely to get a question or two when you re-enter the USA. If you are away more than a year, you will only be allowed back in under very exceptional circumstances (for instance, if you planned to return earlier but illness prevented it).

So moving to Canada will almost certainly affect your US PR status. Even if you manage to keep PR status, you have to have been physically present in the USA for 30 months out of the previous five years to apply for citizenship.

Think very carefully before you do this. Your attorney told you the restrictions for a reason.

Generally, as a LPR you are not supposed to live away from US more than 6 months a year for the 5 years (3yrs through marriage) before you are eligible to apply for the Citizenship. Unless there is acceptable reason by Immigration Officer standard, such as you are seriously ill and the only treatment available is out of US. Although, there is no set manuals for immigration rules. Thus, it is more likely affact your Citizenship eligibilty if you go to Canada to study for a period of times. Consult your lawyer once more.

Well, if your attorney told you you had to spend time in the US and if you are in school in Canada - you can't be 2 places at one time. I think you would make a better Canadian citizen.
