When i was a kid, i probably suffered a nightmare every night that i layed my head down. To this day, i still sleep with my light on (which doesnt say a lot, since i'm 18 now, but they were very vivid and scary dreams!). These are a few theories i heard to keep bad dreams away...
-Sleep with the light on. I had a friend who couldn't dream if her light was on.
-That same friend also told me, if you want better dreams, sleep on your right side, 'cause your left side creates bad ones (but this may have some truth to it, depending on how strongly you believe it. Dreams indicate our thoughts and feelings, so if you truly believe sleeping on your right side will give you good dreams... then hey! You'll probably have a good dream)
-Like people have mentioned, don't eat or drink before bed. If i had cocopops before bed, my dreams were so intense i didn't even know i was dreaming. It was like asleep hallucinating. Stay away from cocopops before bed.
-Are there any problems in your life that could be haunting your mind while you're asleep? Rather than stressing about them while you're awake, try solving them or forgetting them, and the message in your dream will drastically change.
-Go to the toilet before you go to bed. I had another friend who said if her bladder was full, she'd have nightmares.
-Fall asleep to something like music or tv... this helped me probably the most out of everything. 'Cause even when i did still have nightmares, when i woke up and heard my music still playing, or the tv was still running, it was a nice reminder that it's just a dream and i'd fall back asleep peacefully to the tv or music, rather than just because i'm tired.
- I also heard sleeping on your stomach can create bad dreams.
- This one i heard the other day... if your body gets cold while you're sleeping you can have nightmares. So maybe you should throw an extra blanket on you at night. You may wake up incredibly sweaty (i know, because i;ve tried this theory), but i didn't have bad dreams that night either.

Burn a candle in your room right before you go to bed. Put on some soothing, relaxing music and just lay on your bed, clear your head and just think of pleasant thoughts. Like what makes you really happy, an old childhood memory that always leaves you smiling, a puppy even! Leave all the days stress outside your door and go into a calming atmosphere. That should do the trick! Take deep breaths, in thru your nose and out your mouth! Sweet dreams!

Well, bad dreams are a reflection of issues you need to deal with, and resolve. You could try putting your mind to rest at the end of the day. You could try hanging a dream catcher over your bed, and tell yourself when you look at it every night that it will allow only the good dreams to come through, and trap the bad dreams to keep them away from you. You could try telling your troubles to worry dolls, and put them under your pillow where they will worry all night on your behalf. You could try posting the dreams here, so others can try to help you interpret them, and maybe find out what issues you are having that you need to pay attention to. You could try playing soft music and meditating on your way to sleep. There are alot of things you can do, but really, the most important one I would recommend, is try to find out what these dreams are trying to tell you............

Do you remember any of your dreams? If so, do they relate to any part of your day? If it's during a particular thing in a day, then around that time everyday, be very careful what you do.
I've heard that having caffeine before bed makes you have bad dreams, so cut the caffeine about 4 hours before bed.
I've also heard that if you watch something scary or bad on tv before bed, it will cause bad dreams. So try watching comedies or family tv starting 4 hours before bed.

It is more in our attitudes and emotions than anything else. Food can sometimes be the culprit, too. As trite as it may sound, try thinking happy thoughts and being content with things. It just may help, especially if you have a tendency to be pessimistic, down, or worry a lot. Happiness is a choice, not a condition. Good luck.
