A question on colon cleansing should come under the category "alternative medicine." It is not recognized by mainstream physicians for any curative, detoxifying, or preventive purpose.
Actually, when you say "colon cleansing," I assume you mean ememas or colonics. But colon cleansing through use of particular foods or supplements is in the same category.
The only valid purpose of an enema in an otherwise healthy person is to clean you colon prior to a diagnostic or surgical procedure.
Many of these colon cleansing faddists use herbs or chemicals that don't belong in the bottom part of your gut. There is a potential for damage to the delicate tissues in the gut, and there is the possibility that you may absorb something with toxic properties.
Your digestive system works on a first-in, first-out basis. What you ate today is behind what you ate yesterday. Things do not accumulate there. That is impossible. So don't believe anyone who tells you you need a colonic to clear out toxins that have accumulated.

In England you often see ads for 'Colonic Irrigation. Both Princess Diana and Fergie used to have it done pretty often.
Basically a rubber tube is inserted into your colon and a jet of warm water and soap is run into it with another tube taking away the surplus. It's supposed to get all the caked in excrement from the ridges in the bowels out and generally clean the colon. However there's no evidence of any benefit from this.
I personally have had several colonoscopys where they insert a camera inside your colon with a light so you can see it on a TV screen. Following the stuff they give you to empty your bowels you can see that, at least in my case since I've not seen anyone else's. there was no internal residue at all so I'd think that anyone having such treatment will probably be wasting their money. There's always the danger that the natural mucus that lines the intestines and protects them from inflammation and infection will be washed away or damaged so my advice is to stay well clear.

Some people swear by it. But, in my humble opinion for whatever it's worth, I believe having a high fiber diet, increasing intake of fibrous fruits, veggies, and legumes, and eliminating red meats and dairy such as cheese and ice cream gets you to Kansas the same way.
UPDATE*** As a practitioner of alternative medicine, I completely disagree with "nobodyinparticular" that colon cleansing qualifies as such. It's just crazy and unnecessary. And, it should never, ever be done because some "celebrity" got paid to tell you it's good for you.

If done the way it was intended, it cleans out all the crap (no pun intended) that could be sitting in your colon. It cleans you out just fine. It doesn't mean more build up won't accumulate, but I thinks its good to do for general colon health.

I know they sell this stuff in Wholefoods Market, you figure it went through rigorous scrutinization before being put on a shelf there? I also know someone who used the stuff and said he felt REALLY GOOD after taking this nasty stuff.

It is not only unsafe, it's unnecessary. The human body has been doing a splendid job of ridding itself of toxins for thousands of years; we don't need to start monkeying with it now!

Enemas are unnecessary.
Liquid chlorophyll and apple cider vinegar are both good colon cleansers.
