I guess it really depends on your financial status. I'm not poor, but definitely not rich....and THE MOST I ever spend on birthday decorations is around $100. This is just for decorations ($40), food (Little Caesar $5 pizzas--$30), games and bags ($30---I shop at the Dollar Tree a lot--lol) , and of course I am a great cook (lol) and make the cake myself. Now, if you're throwing a party w/ a clown, or magician, or a dressed up Spiderman coming from the roof (like one of my friends did), then of course the amount is going to exceed this greatly.
But instead of looking at the cost, just think of what you can afford....kids can have fun watching movies, or you could open the presents first and they all could play w/ the toys together. No matter what just let the b-day enjoy their day---decorations don't really matter too much in the end. They'll just remember the people and the time they had, and will barely recalled whether it was a batman or superman party.

I have 4 kids and very little money. I try and spend about 100 per kid but every 5 years they get a party. then its about 250 dollars. Boy 19 years ago....when my oldest turned 2 ,I went way overbored for his birthday. I was only 19 then. I had a huge party at my grandmother house. I dont even know how much money I spent. I was working 2 jobs and staying with my mother while my husband was out at sea in the navy). I even borrowed the clown costume from work. (I was bingo the clown at the ground round restaraunt) and dressed up. I had a lot of fun with it but my oh my did I go overboard.

my daughter who turned 9 yrs old in march had her birthday at pump it up, it's an inflatable play zone and i spent $300.00 to rent out the place and then i spent $150.00 on her gifts. It was worth it to see the happiness on her face on her special day. My son is only 20 months old and on his first birthday, we had just family as that is how i like it..I spent total $100.00 on his party and he could of cared less...lol.. but my daughter wants to invite her friends and such and i do not want to clean up the mess, that is why i end up spending quite a hunk of cash for her parties.

We just spent $1000 for our son's birthday this past June. We rented a huge moon bounce, a double wild rapids water slide, and a snow cone machine (that doubled as a margarita machine later on for the parents - that was a big hit!) and had BBQ catered from Red Hot & Blue. It was a blast for everyone because adults could get on the moon bounce and water slide too!

I try not to spend too much, otherwise they will start expecting it all the time. I have 2 children and I"m pregnant. When I have this one their b-days will be in May, June, and July. So, I usually try not to spend over $200. That is decorations, cake, snack foods, drinks, pop, ect.

whoo hoo, glad mine are born 2 weeks and a year apart so I can throw them togehter!
Although I could easily see spending $100 if you were barbequing with friends and had to buy beer.

I know someone throw big parts with thousands. All guests went to Disneyland, and had dinner at Rainforest cafe, plus a pretty fancy gift bag.
