In that day his thoughts do perish.

Psalms 104:29 If you conceal your face, they get disturbed.
If you take away their spirit, they expire,
And back to their dust they go.

And the soul that is sinning, it, itself will die. So, as we all sin, we all die. The soul dies when death occurs.

These verses are referring to the whole person decsending into the ground, into Sheol forever. The Hebrews did not have the Greek concept of mind/body/spirit duality until much later.

Rationality and consciousness aren't the same thing, there is as of yet no explanation for how consciousness works. What is known is that several areas of the brain may be used at the same moment and we experience them all as integrated in one location, the seat of consciousness.
