They're not backward.

The flag is only backwards on the right side. This goes back to the days when someone actually carried a flag on a pole. The pole is always in front. From the right side, the side attached to the pole is facing forward. It also serves show that Americans always move forward, never back.

It's that the flag needs to be facing the correct direction. Since the blue field is the front of the flag, that is the direction that is going forward.

It's not that it's backwards, just the correct direction.

A friend of mine that is in the Military told me that it's a sign of being strong. You'll notice this same thing on Airplanes and on the space shuttle. If it were displayed with the 'stripes' leading, this gives the impression that one is backing away, instead of going forward.

My question was then... why not wear it on the other arm in the CORRECT direction??!!
