Such as on a shotgun... What purpose does the Vent Rib add to the barrel? Does this act as an accessory rail?

The vent rib helps keep the barrel cool and helps prevent heat waves from messing up aim.

Vent Rib Barrel

The ventilated rib is a heat sink. And it's purpose as others said is to keep the barrel cool and keep the heat from producing mirage heat waves in the air which messes up your aim. Ernie Simmons invented the expandable vent rib that was on dove tails and would allow the barrel to stretch from the heat and not pop off the silver solder that held the vent ribs (the solidly attached ribs) The holes in the rib are to have more surface to cool the metal of the rib as the air passes through. The holes also keep the weight down. And having the rib elevated gives you a nice solid plane to guide your eye to the end of the barrel. Some people add sights and gadgets on the vent rib which destroys the purpose of it in my opinion.
By the way the little bead on the end and sometimes in the middle are not for aiming. Unless you are using the shotgun for deer hunting with a slug. The two bead system is used during trap shooting to keep you from canting the shotgun. But when you are hunting birds if you are using the front bead to aim like a rifle-- that is why you are missing your bird. You should be looking at the bird, not the front bead. And swinging the end of the barrel in front of the bird and then pulling your trigger.

Do you plan on using your shotgun to the point that a heat shield will be necessary? On most, it's just a "tacticool" feature. It being there is supposed to keep your hand safe should you grab the gun by the barrel. The vent rib doesn't really serve the same purpose. I always assumed it was there to keep the barrel true in case it did get hot enough to warp the thin metal the barrels are made of. If I'm wrong, it is my hope that someone will set me straight. I'd much rather have the vent rib on my shotguns.

Vent Rib

The 'venting' is intended to prevent the thermal expansion of the barrel from breaking the rib loose, as well as minimizing the heat transfer from the barrel to the rib. It does not act as a heat sink.

The function of the rib is to provide a smooth sighting plane for the eye to follow along when aiming the shotgun, as well as to minimize the mirage in the sighting plane produced by barrel heat. Some accessories are designed to clamp to a vent rib, but this was not the original intention, only a convenient side effect.

Its there to maximize your sight picture similar to a runway for an airplane. It also acts as a radiator to prevent heat waves from interfering with your sight picture along the barrel.*

It's a heat dissipating radiator and an aiming aid.
