He can dip, sure. You should take turns or else you'll get your rods banging into each other. And hold his rod, if only for something to do while he's drilling the ice hole. That way you might still get a nibble on the end while he's ripping the new one.

I've held the rod of a boring @ss hole before. I might have came prepared, but ended up not coming at all.

Rip him a new one if he won't lighten up

make sure you get one of thos ice fishing cabins, you dont want the rod to freeze and the hole to seal.

take plenty of rubber with you for the drips and you will need a double sleeping bag.hope this helps
