I'm no cheer leader, but I am still flexible and am able to do side and front splits. Yes you can still be flexible but it takes alot of hard work and paitience, I started of by stretching a little daily, personally stretching brings out flexibility but you need to be careful as you don't want to exert too much pressure on your body that can cause an injury. Always warm up, before you stretch. Some people are born naturally flexible, just a little work here and there and Ola... their perfect. While some have excellent stamina or both flexibility and stamina. While others have to work on both. I started going to the gym a few years back and first got my body into shape and started of with the normal routine stretching, once I knew I was ready to work on my flexibility, I increased the stretching and did it more often, by applying the right amount of pressure a day at a time, I got this far. You know your goal and that is to get flexibility, work on stretching and cardio, If you have Never done streching don't expect to do a split on your first day cos your will only cause yourself an injury and pain. A little a day will go a very long way. Yoga is also something that helps heaps. When your minds and emotions clear the body naturally becomes flexible. All the best...

I would suggest "Yoga For Dummies". It's both a book and a video. Practicing yoga has greatly increased my flexibility.
There are many decent beginner yoga books and videos.
In fact, most of the athletic stretches you see in gym class, sports and cheerleading are derived from yoga.
If yoga turns you off then there are some very good non yoga type stretching DVDs as well. A particularly good one is called "Pure and Simple Stretch" It's available at Amazon.
In addition, being active will help aid flexibility. Mucles that get regular movement stay looser than sedentary muscles.

You can acquire stretching any way you want. You don't have to be a skinny cheerleader. My friend is overweight and she can do a split just as well as any skinny girl. DO NOT HURT YOURSELF. Some people are more flexible than others- if your body cannot stretch that far and such, be careful and don't force your body to do something it cannot do just yet. Yoga books could help you!

STRETCHING; such an under appreciated piece of the health/fitness "pie"!!!
You can go on-line to find plenty of comprehensive flexibility exercises. what is important, however, is a static (for at LEAST 30 seconds) hold at your end-range of mild discomfort. Perhaps a few reps each stretch. at least once per day. and be consistent!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a Physical Therapist and former pro athlete, so i have unique qualifications in this field.

Lots of sports and exercises lead to flexibility: yoga, track & field, karate, martial arts, etc.

You just have to do the exercises regularly.
