Different states have variations on JP's or clerks administering or solemnizing marraige vows.

You may have to ask the department of statistics, or city hall in your own town.

They will also tell you which JP would most likely be available to book for the date of your wedding, so if you prefer or have a particular JP in mind, let her or him know already. This is at least 12 months ahead so there is no reason why you cannot get her or him.

The cost of the license will be determined again by your city hall or Bureau of Statistics. While you are there talking to the man behind the counter and asking which JP can do the ceremony for you, ask him advice on tipping as well.

Remember that the JP has to come to the place you will have the wedding; ie garden cliff, waterfall, seashore, etc.

Does he have to don a wet suit if it is underwater? lol

My advice is a thank you card signed by you and spouse, with some money inside, a token of your appreciation especially if he or she did a good job and made the occasion memorable.

Ours are free but for coming to the courthouse they are 25.00 (tip) and are usually given more for the wedding such a 50.00. They are a cheaper way to go. Also they are better if you aren't looking for much religion in the ceremony, but some still put it in so you might want to check on that aspect before you hire anyone. Good Luck!

I don't see that anyone has answered what you should look for. In my opinion you should interview a couple of them, see who you both feel more comfortable with, who seems to understand your relationship, your needs, and desires best.
My cousin's husband is a notary public and my fiance and I are just getting to know him, so we might ask him to officate our wedding.
