what do i say? without going to low or or high? is saying negotiable good enough?

If you are applying for a position, you should have knowledge of your education, experience in the field, job level you are applying for and a basic idea what that particular position is offering. That way you will know what an appropriate response would be without stretching the range. Do your homework on the position and of course your background and experience will determine your level of salary.

You need to have a number in mind. You can always negotiate from that number if a preliminary offer is made.
