And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John bore witness about him, and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.'" And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

The word (the word of God, the way to forgiveness and salvation) became flesh (the birth of Jesus. Physically lived among people at that time. They saw, heard, and experienced His greatness. Jesus is God/the Son of God. Jesus exemplified grace, love, and truth in all He did. John the Baptist foretold of Jesus shortly before Jesus started His forthright ministry. John told of Jesus, His power, love, forgiveness, and that Jesus existed in Heaven before He was born on earth. It is by the grace of God, through Jesus that we are saved and can have eternal life in Heaven. Moses spoke of the law (rules, regulations) as needing to be adhered to and kept to be forgiven and go to Heaven. A person had to do things to sort of earn his/her way to Heaven. Jesus took that mandate away and made salvation possible through Him, what He (not we) did. It is by the grace and love of God for us that we no longer have to do things to be forgiven of our sins and be saved. Jesus did those things for us when He died to pay the penalty of our sins (He took our sins upon Himself) and make us right,& sinless in Gods eyes. No one has actually ever seen God. We have seen God through the presents, words, deeds and actions of Jesus. Jesus/God-the Son of God, is known to us and in that way, we see God and His love.

The King James vs 18 No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared Him.
The bosom I believe is the place of emotion. God is love. So?
We are not under the law, but under the Grace & Truth of God.

There are a number of things here: 1)The testimony that He was here on earth, in the FLESH, just as we are 2)That we have been given a measure of grace to understand this, 3)That He was/is the physical manifestation of what God is all about, ie He came to show us what God's PLAN for mankind is all about.
Does that answer your question? Nothing has changed from 2000 years ago/6000 years ago....nothing.

John is telling us that Jesus in THE WORD. If you want to simplify it (it is not simple but human minds can only stretch so far). Jesus dwelt in heaven with God from the beginning. Humans started to stray from God. God loved us and did not want us to turn away from Him. Jesus agreed to come to earth to save us. He was born of woman therefore he was human/God. As a human He understood us. He died for our sins that we may be saved. You might say that Jesus was God's Word... God explaining Himself to man. Jesus said 'they who have seen me have seen God'

Jesus is the Word. He gave the word in the OT laws. He became flesh as the perfect sacrifice from the Father. That is why it says in Genesis, come let us make man in our image.
