What are your opinions on homework?

I mean, I think it's kind of ridiculous that kids spend 8 hours at school each day and still have to bring 1 or 2 hours worth (if not more, for older students) of work home with them each night. Now, granted if a child doesn't get his work done in the time alotted at school then I think he should bring it home and get it done. But, I'm talking about teachers who automatically assign homework without giving the kids any time to work on it at school--it's strictly "homework".

What are your opinions on this?

Kids are learning enough responsibility by getting their work done at school.

Shouldn't school time be school time and home time be home time?

Homework, should hopefully, be connected to the study lessons they are learning that week. It should help give them pratice with what they are being taught. This also gives parents a chance to see what there children are learning in school. If the homework is not being explained, and not conneted to the lessons, then this is not very affective.
Nowadays, kids need as much knowledge as possibly. Due to a growing society and needing a good education to get a good paying job. No one wants to think there kid is going to spend all this time in school, then work at McDonalds....

I don't see a problem with some homework. But for younger kids it shouldn't be more than 30-45 minutes and 1-2 assignments per day. As a student gets into junior high and high school, I think it's reasonable to expect the homework load to increase as they usually have 6-8 classes each day and each class has less than an hour.

However, I do agree that it's ridiculous for a student to have several hours of homework every night. That being said, can you imagine what would happen to a student in college if they weren't used to doing homework on a regular basis?

I'm not sure what age your talking about. I believe teacher see this time as an opportunity for parents to be involved in there child's learning. I think I remember hearing one teacher asking other teachers how they can get parents more involved. I personally do not agree with teachers trying to push there ideals and morality on parents. We as parents should teach are children at home. Learning should start in the home not the other way around. unfortunately there are many parents who either don't have the time or don't care. There are probably more these day's then in past years as parents are starting out at an earlier age then ever before.

Personally I think schools should set up more after school programs. these have been shown to work well for children that do not have full time parents.

i also think that Homework enforces the child's ability to learn in different environments. This ability will come in handy while performing on the job learning later in life.

I think the "Homework" labeled as a project that they give two or three weeks to complete is ok. Other than that I hate it. My child is already in Resource classes for help,so even the typical homework that could take other children 20 or 30 minutes takes an hour or two, then on top of that we work on handwriting, additional reading, or math so that we can help her get back where she needs to be. We almost have no nighttime left to enjoy, come home from wk/school, homework, dinner, possible more homework, shower or bathtime, pick clothes out, go to bed, get up start all over.

I help out in class a lot so I see what is happening in alot of classes.First the over crowding and the biggest reason I think is that parents now days do not teacher their children respect. They do not teacher their children how to behave So the teacher is spending a lot of time getting children to be quiet to stay in their sets not to talk back and big one here.....to sit still and listen so everyone in the class can hear what is going on.Parents can believe its the teachers fault but really the problem has started with them. For many reason parents are so busy working They have forgotten they have a responsibility to teach simple basic behavior.I'm not saying these kids are bad kids they just have never be taught proper behavior. And believe me they certainly are not going to learn it from TV.Nor do I think its the soul responsibility of the teacher.Yes home work is a drag I too complain all the time.I have 4 children 26 22 21 and 9.Yes we have survived.I know its hard to squeeze in the time to help with them. But you will be glad you did one day.And It also is a great way to spend a few minutes out of the day with our kids.

I simply could not agree with you more!
I have children ages 7 and 9, and when they come home they are mentally shattered, on top of that, I can guarantee that they will have sometype of homework to do.
They do spend a lot of time at school and it really is a lot of work that they do,
I don't know whether to lay the blame at the government for how they make the layout of how to teach kids today and how much to give them, or is it teachers today that are just useless!!!!!
When i was their age it was the early 80's, and when we came home it was straight outside to play till supper time,
Homework didn't start till i started secondary school
I mean they even have a school diary, a school reading diary, a library book, a maths book, a spellings book and a calender with pencil case to carry each day!!!!
it's just sooooooo wrong. I think they are pressurised at such an early age

I agree with you. Most of us don't go to work for 8 hours and then bring 2-3 hours more work home with us.

If the HW is quick to reinforce what was learned during the day, then fine. But some of these students in HS have 5 hours of work after school. Everyone needs down time. There are better ways to teach responsibility.

I can't believe anyone is sticking up for the students??? They are in school for 8 hours a day, but realistically, how many of those 8 hours are actually spent actively learning? 2, maybe 3 hours tops.

As an adult they will learn real quick that you may not always finish your work during the 8 to 5 work day, so you may have to take it home or work late. Quick complaining and do the homework and enjoy it!!! You'll be paying bills and answering to "The Man" soon enough.

Homework is essential, what's done at school is one thing, but homework is something that reinforces what you are learning in school. There is nothing wrong with teachers giving out homework strictly to do at home. It will always continue to be that way, the kids need to continue with their studies from school to home.

It's not ridiculous. It's responsibility.

Being a high school student, I can understand where the importance of homework comes in but what I don't understand is why the unterminable amount?!?! T.T

Homework is practicing and applying the day's lesson so you can remember it better. BUT what about those who have sports after school? We get home at around 6:30, we eat, we shower and we get ready to do homework. which is around 7:30/8:00. Getting 2-6 hours of homework means longer days, little or no studying, less sleep, being tired, not being able to focus because you are tired, and that just builds up...

and finally getting sick and missing school for a month because it turns out to be mono...

i'd actually prefer it if they gave less homework and more time to study :D

Homework - yes
Mountains of it - they can shove it up where the sun don't shine :D
