Ok, Bible constantly compares followers to a herd of sheep in need of a shepherd and all that. Christians, do you find that offensive at all? I'm sure you are not compared to sheep because of your soft fur, so what is it? Inability to think for yourselves?

I don't want to offend anyone here, it's just the first thing that comes to mind when i hear "sheep" is an unsure, scared animal that wouldn't do anything unless told to. I mean there were instances when the entire herd was slaughtered, just because their shepherd wasn't around. Wouldn't it be better to be able to fend for yourself, be a proverbial wolf than a sheep?

In the Biblical days, and even today, sheep are a very valuable commodity. Why do you think they were guarded so? A loss of even one sheep could mean a lot to the owner, and not only were there predators but thieves to guard against. The shepherd was a very important person, and could be severely punished if found to be derelict of their duties. The relationship between the sheep and the shepherd was a close one, too. The shepherd would not only guard them, he led them to water, food, and shelter. He aided them in the birthing process. He mended their wounds.
Frankly, compared to the shepherd, sheep ARE rather dumb. And compared to our Lord, WE ARE rather DUMB creatures! WE DO need a LOT of care and looking after. And I can't think of anyone better to look after me than my Lord.
To say that we are not the most intelligent beings in the universe is not an insult to me... it happens to be the truth! When I look around me at all the wonders of the universe, I am not only awed by it all, but truely "put in my place."
Another side note... Camels were also important "commodities," but if I had the choice to be compared to a sheep or a camel, I think I would prefer the sheep!
Have a blessed day.

If you didn't want to offend anyone you would have asked the question more like, Why are Christians referred to as sheep?
Proverbs 14:8 - The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.
You are acting in the spirit of antichrist.

Its not as much as we are "sheep" in that it is how we are handled by God, and by Jesus. They handle things in such a loving way... The way sheperds handle sheep.... Back in the day... There were many sheperds and that is what it is comparative to. :) You NEVER see a sheperd beating or speaking harshly to sheep, do you? Nor can you ever imagine a sherperd sending his sheep to a buring furnace because they did something wrong. Like many of these other religions out there, they teach that God sends people to hell for doing things wrong, that is NOT true. You may go to hell, but not a buring place. Hell is the common grave... But anyway...I kinda got away from your question... :) Sorry about that....

Could it have anything to do with shepards were very common inJesus time? He also talks a lot about farming and comparing people to seeds...should that offend also. Sometime I think people look too deep into things that are simple. He related to them in ways they could understand, these people knew about sheep, farming, and fish...is it that surprising that all 3 of those come up in his teachings?

I am not offended at all. It is so because sheep stay in a group, they stay together at all times. They listen to their Shepherd and know His voice. If one is lost then everything stops until found.

I do not find it offensive ... it is just an analogy. He's saying he is our guardian, he watches over us and since we do not have extremely great wisdom, by which I mean compared to God ... we might have 'great wisdom' in our own life, but compared to God we don't, he helps guide us away from trouble, like a shepherd for his sheep.

The Bible makes many similar references to children or slaves. I think it is saying that the best thing to be is obedient.
