I'm looking into buying either a used Honda Element or Jeep Wrangler, probably around '04 element or '00-'02 wrangler, anyone have any preferences? I live in an area where snow and ice can be an issue in the winter, and I drive pretty far to school and back (lots of gas). Thanks in advance! p.s. please don't tell me if you think the elements are ugly, thats not what i'm worried about ;)

Buy American. Keep American money in America.

Jeep Wrangler

I drive these where I work, and they are nice if you just need a basic vehicle. Not much in the bells and whistles department, but well worth owning in extreme conditions.

The jeep is nice because you have more ground clearance and will be able to track through the snow better than with the element. The element on the other hand gets better gas mileage than the wrangler. If you are going to go with the wrangler, make sure you get a hard top for the winter. I would go with the jeep, good in the winter and top off in the summer. Jeep has that classic "cool" look, too!

if ice and snow are a factor then i would def. go with the wrangler. the wrangler is 4-wheel drive, and i dont know about the element, but it will def. help in the snow.
even with street tires the wrangler has really good control and it doesnt get stuck that easily(based on the drivers skills).

Definately get the TJ (Jeep). It still has the AMC engine, NV transfer case and Dana axles. It was the last Jeep worth buying. Just don't go for any of these new Chrysler-bastardized Jeep products.

are you kidding? don't even think about the element. it's a honda!!! no good. go for the wrangler. more reliable, more fun, much better in the snow. the wrangler gets good gas mileage as long as you don't get bigger tires, lift it, etc. the wrangler is the car for you. trust me.

They are very different. For your application, I would go for the Element. It's more reliable, gets better fuel economy, and the awd system is great for snowy roads. One of my neighbors has one and it was blasting through our huge Colorado blizzards last winter. He was one of the first ones out and driving around when we were all huddled inside, looking out the windows.

The advantage of the Wrangler is the off-road capability. It has a locked center-differential and low-range gearing which is a big help for crawling on 4x4 roads. The 4x4 system is part-time, which means you have to engage and disengage it yourself.

The Element has a more useful interior...you can fit more inside than the Wrangler. And the Element is easier to drive in the snow...the awd is automatic---all you have to do is drive! It's prefectly suited for snowy roads.

If you drive them both, you'll probably really like the Element. It's so much nicer driving.

Hmmmm....I guess I'd have better luck with this in the Honda section!

You really want the Jeep!!! (If you wouldn't, your question should be in the Honda area.)
Go for it, it's a very reliable truck.
For any of them, make sure to check it via carfax.com, so you find out if it hadn't been crashed or the maintenance has been in order.

If you want a 4X4 get the Jeep. If you want a motorcycle go with the Honda.

The element is ugly.

I have one of each.....and I'd have a very hard time choosing between them. They're both really great vehicles.....and both just a little off the beaten path! I LIKE that!

Either way, you can't go wrong. Good luck.
