It is awful on its own. I eat it mashed up with potatoes, then it's delicious.
Here's what you do, for every large jar of sauerkraut, peel and boil 1300 grammes of potatoes. As the potatoes are cooking, empty the jar of sauerkraut into a colander and with a kitchen scissors, cut it into smaller pieces. Let it drain until the potatoes are cooked, in the meantime cook your sausages (I prefer Dutch smoked sausages, but you can use the large fried sausages also). Once the potatoes are cooked and all the water is gone, add a little milk to them and mash them. Add your chopped up and drained sauerkraut and mix it up really well. You can add butter if you like, depending on how many calories you wish to consume, but do add enough milk to make it like mashed potatoes. Add some freshly ground black pepper to the mashed potato/sauerkraut mix, stir it up, and serve it up on a plate with your sausage, and some coarse grain mustard. This dish is called stampot zuurkool in the Netherlands, and the amount here is enough to feed four people.
Leftover stampot can be fried on a hot oiled pan so that you have little crispy brown bits through it, it's even better than the original dish! Just give it a good stir every two or three minutes.
I hope this makes sauerkraut a bit more palatable to you. This is a very healthy dish.
If you do attempt to eat it out directly from the jar, drain it well first, you can even rinse it if you like as it's usually very salty. My husband makes a strong-tasting sauerkraut salad with raisins and chopped sweet apples and a lot of honey. Makes the stuff easier to eat, but it's still not for the faint-hearted!

Good sauerkraut has quite a mild flavor. I usually rinse it and drain it well before I cook it.
Best way to have sauerkraut is as a side dish fried with onions and some nice cracked pepper. Mmmmmmm

I love sauerkraut, especially out of a jar. Out of a tin it is gross. I did not like sauerkraut when I was little, though.

Nah. You gotta have it on a hot dog sometimes.
Or a polish sausage on a bun.
Or a knockwurst.
Ummm. Sauerkraut, diced onion, spicy mustard. (Insert Home Simpson impersonation here.)

It's great with roast pork loin. We add a little brown sugar, a little finely diced apple and onion, halved red potatoes and the pork and bake it, covered, all together. And it really makes a reuban sandwich! But no, I don't like it plain.

My husband does, and no matter how many times I tell him not to eat too much, he always ends having to do extra visits to the loo, lol.
In any case I believe it's an acquired taste thing.
