TSA: (Sikh) Turbans Don't Have to Be Removed

Air passengers will no longer have to remove bulky headwear such as turbans at screening checkpoints if doing so makes them uncomfortable.

In August, the Transportation Security Administration changed its guidelines and subjected travelers to secondary screening at security checkpoints if they were wearing head coverings, such as cowboy hats, berets or turbans. The screenings could have included a pat-down search of the head covering, if the screener found it necessary.

But some religious organizations were outraged at the new rule and felt it was a form of racial profiling. For instance, in the Sikh religion, the turban is considered private, and removing a turban would be like removing a woman's blouse, according to the New York-based Sikh Coalition. Since 2001, federal policy has required screeners to search turbans only if they do not clear a metal detector.

either you follow the rules, or you don't get on the plane. end of story. sounds to me like they don't want equal rights, but special priviledges. and i'd be real real real suspicious of anyone who wouldn't want to follow security guidelines for ''personal reasons.''

It was Indira Gandhi who was killed by two Sikh extremists, members of her own guard, her son Rajiv was murdered by Tamils.

But as to that ruling, if you can hide plastic in a turban you can hide it as well in trousers. So when is it too much and when is it not enough? Especially since numerous journalists have demonstrated they could sneak in an airport carrying guns or explosives.

Airport security is a joke anyway.

While 80 yrs. old grandmothers are being strip searched, airport employees are never checked. All the turban terrorists have to do is remove their turbans, say they are Mexican, and get a job at the airports.

So all the money is wasted. Existing employees would probably sneak in whatever one wanted for an extra $200.00 anyway.

now and again we misunderstand your remark expensive, yet because i comprehend that you're a muallaf, i can settle on your situation you position on your questions. properly like a number of our muslims sisters and brothers asserting, enable them search for. i wish they search for it proper no longer only a proforma; that is a pity that they in basic terms search for "the muslim's look" because the bomber might want to be easily all and multiple. Checking hand bags contained in the airport is well-known, they attempt this random because lengthy time period in the past. Dont situation, situation replaced, have you ever study what V.Putin suggested the different day abt Bush ? that is interresting. Salaam

Let them remove the head coverings themselves . They could hold it out in front of them and submit to ex ray, hand held metal detection and/or pat search. They need to understand that things have to be deemed safe and secure. What if the headgear was not searched and some fool had an explosive device stuffed away inside of it and was used to take over the air craft? 9/11all over again all because some head gear wasn't checked out. --Not a good idea.

That is insane! I am with that guy drew on this one. Either the head covering comes off or you should not be allowed get on the plane. You should never be allowed to compromise the safety and security of the other passengers.
This is nuts! If one has nothing to hide, they should be happy to comply with any security requirement!

I want to say that I believe they shouldn't be required to remove them if they consider it offensive to them or their religion; however, I know I would feel uncomfortable on a plane with someone with massive headwear, knowing it hadn't been searched.
