How high up should the rear speakers be set up? I have the front speakers at ear level but have read different things on the rear speakers.

Thanks.

IMO, they need to be slightly behind your listening position and at least a foot or 2 above your head when you're sitting down. Try to point them towards the front/center of the room too.

This isn't always possible though, so my advice is to try them in different locations that are practical for your room. It doesn't have to be perfect according to THX standards. The important part is that it sounds good to you and works for your room.

Back in the ProLogic days, Dolby recommended that sound engineers put wind, rain, non-locatable effect sounds to the rear speakers. So they recommended putting the rear speakers up 3-5 feet above ear level. Also - both rear speakers played the same sound.

When DD 5.1 came out - sound engineers now had the ability to put very specific sounds to one or the other rear speaker. They started to take advantage of this and many modern movies have sounds that swirl to one side or the other. For these movies, having the tweeters on all 5 speakers at the same height helps create the surround sound.

This is why you read different recommendations.

Both placements work well. But let this be your guide: Putting the rear speakers to the sides of a couch means one person is being blasted on the left, and another person is being blasted on the right. Only the person in the center gets a balanced sound.

If you have this situation, put the speakers up and to the sides so there is some distance to the left and right seats.

I have the Rocketfish wireless rear speaker kit. You run your rear speaker cables to the powered unit that receives the signal from the transmitter hooked up to the back of the receiver. It works really well, but it's not exactly what you're looking for. I suppose you could buy two of these and hook one speaker up to each (assuming they don't transmit on the same frequency), but they aren't small. They're about the size of a cigar box.

Rear speakers should be slightly higher so that to not draw attention to them.

I think it is distracting to have them at ear height...a couple of feet up.
