Most ancient people did not.
Most ancient people that are considered sun worshippers were not literally practicing astrolatry (the worship of heavenly bodies) but instead saw the heavenly bodies as SYMBOLS for the gods themselves.
Literal astrolatry is prehistoric, so we have no contemporary documents about it...we can only guess.

some pagan traditions would (and still do) stay up all night to bring in the sun on the solstices. these were extremely important days for them. they believed that if they didn't do this, then the sun wouldn't rise in the morning, or ever again
edit: they didn't actually "worship" the sun

They simply changed sun god to son of god.

G's they didn't have any sun glasses, I am sure a few of them experienced blindness from UV rays.
