What are the health risks, if any, from consuming raw fish?
Are there certain types of fish that are better for you than others if you eat it raw?
What type of bacteria, if any, is present in raw fish that would be harmful for human consumption?
Thank you!

Sushi is a Japanese-style rolled delicacy that often contains raw fish is considered highbrow fare. And sushi, as well as sashimi (raw fish alone), is safe, if the fish has been commercially frozen, then thawed. If it hasn't been, you may be risking an illness from parasitic worms or their larvae hidden in the flesh of fish.
The chance of getting sick from fish, cooked or raw, is actually much less than from chicken or meat, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) statistics tell us. However, if you encounter a bad piece of sushi, you won't care about the odds. Troublesome parasites can merely make you uncomfortable or they can make you severely ill, depending on the type of worm you unknowingly ingest.
If the culprit is a tapeworm, fluke or flatworm, you may not even know it until it passes out in your stool. Or, you might experience nausea, cramps and diarrhea. But at least these microbes are easily treated with antibiotics.
Swallow the roundworm, Anisakis simplex, however, and the consequence, a disease called anisakiasis, will make your stomach churn--both literally and figuratively. If you're "lucky," the worm will cause a tickle in your throat as it is swallowed, prompting you to cough or vomit it up. If not, it can bore into your stomach or gut lining, causing severe abdominal inflammation and pain that mimics appendicitis or an ulcer, often within an hour of eating. The only way to get the worm out at this stage is through removal by endoscope or surgery. In addition, Anisakis has been documented as provoking severe allergic reactions in some people.

The answers above are all correct but focus mostly on parasites. There are many bacteria that are also dangerous. Besides the common staph, strep, and salmonella, raw fish are well known for campylobacter and vibro parahemolyticus. Two organisms you do not want to deal with. There are many others depending on how the fish is handled and what kind of temperature abuse it has undergone. Personally I wouldn't touch raw fish with a ten foot poll. But some people think the risk is worth it. And I love fish. Good Luck

I guess if the fish is bad quality. Always eat fresh and clean. Eat from a good and trusted restaurant. Eating a lot of raw fish is bad for you. I heard it's bad for your liver or something else. Eat some sushi that don't have any raw fish.

Parasites. Just remember everything in the Ocean is a predator. So you don't really know what the fish ate before you ate it. Eating anything raw is pretty dangerous.

The thing I would worry most about is killing off the ocean. Sushi has become so popular that certain areas of the ocean are being depleted and soon certain types of fish will be non-existent. Check out the Ocean watch seafood guide...it's a printable guide you put in your pocket and when you go out for fish you can check it to see which fish are endangered, which are full of mercury...etc. and you can make an educated choice about the best fish to eat. I have included the link for the printable guide where you can find more information.

You can get food poisoning, I got it pretty bad form fatty tuna. I passed out in the ER waiting to be let in with blood coming out of my eyes from puking so hard. 6 months later- eating sushi again. It just goes to show that the benefits outweigh the costs...

Sushi with Fugu (pufferfish) can kill you if not prepared correctly. The organs contain poison and one must be licensed to prepare this fish for consumption.
