What are the differences in the PS3 40 and 60GB versions? Apart from the hard disk, of course. I heard that the 40GB doesn't have some kind of Compact Card Slot - what does this mean?

Wait, the 40GB doesn't have Wi-Fi OR an ethernet cable? So it can't connect to the internet at all? That doesn't make sense. Don't you mean it doesn't have an ethernet cable?

The difference is the the 40 GB lacks Wi-Fi, HDMI (for HD video), and some card slots which can be used to transfer things from the camera, computer, and other media devices to the PS3. I have the 60 GB and the Wi-Fi and extra space is nice. But I don't use the slots.

40GB doesn't have card reader (for memory cards - used in cellulars, cameras, PSP, etc). It has 2 USB ports (other versions have 4). USB ports are used to recharge your controllers, printer, flash drives, printers, keyboards, etc.
40GB isn't compatible with PS2 games at all, it plays only PS1 games. Apart from that - it's all the same.
