Benjamin Franklin said this in 1776.

Here are some details about when and why Franklin said this quote:

"[Franklin] was also one of the committee of five which drew up what is known as the 'Declaration of Independence.' When about to sign it Hancock, one of his colleagues, is reported to have said, 'We must be unanimous; there must be no pulling different ways; we must all hang together.' 'Yes,' replied Franklin, 'we must hang together, or we will be pretty sure to hang separately.' "

By "hang together," he meant that all member of Congress need to act in solidarity by signing the Declaration and officially breaking ties with Britain. However, signing the Declaration was essentially an act of treason against Britain. So if the members of Congress had been caught by the British, they would have been hanged. Franklin's quip was kind of a form of gallow's humor. No one knew how the revolution would turn out, so there was every chance that by signing the Declaration, they would essentially be signing their own death warrants.

To me it means if we all were to think in the same sense we would unite and be one towards rthe same goal as if we were to follow our own path within the same goal we would not succeed but would fall off the path hence we would be separate.

There is power in unity.
