Aside from social responsibility, nothing. I do participate in charity, but that's because I find it customary to help out your fellow neighbor.

Helping the poor is great . I don't see any connection with that help and "God" .
When an Atheist and a Christian work side by side helping someone , no one can see "gods" love in one, and not the other. God has absolutely nothing to do with it .

Shows that atheists love because they feel it rather than "experience" it.....
I happen to believe that it also means more, because an atheist doesn't worry that bad things will happen to them if they don't serve the poor, as you put it. It just makes them feel better in themselves. A more selfless act... (I say "more", because it is arguable that there are no entirely selfless acts, and that's not a debate worth going into!!)

it means atheists have more time on their hands. we aren't out patting each other on the back telling ourselves what a great job we're doing and how holy we all are. most all of you volunteer fundies have the same expression, looking down your friggin noses at people less fortunate than yourselves. its all a bunch of crap. you are all vain, self absorbed twits that feel the need to 'help' people while simultaneously making them feel sub human. it would be better for everyone if you just wrote a check and notified the media...

Sorry to burst your bubble kid, but nobody cares what you do.
I do suggest that you serve the poor to show human empathy though, as god is not involved in your act, just you.

Volunteering for most people is selfish in one way or the other. None of us have unconditional love toward one another...It just might mean, it makes them feel good so they do it...or they want to look good to their fellow man...we all derive something from giving,,even when we are unbelievers...some people take pride in giving...pride is a sin....some do it to take it off their income tax.....
There are as many reasons for volunteering as there are people...Even Christians are in trouble if it doesn't come from the heart and they just want to show good works..you can't work your way to Heaven...

As a Christian I am reflecting the life Jesus led and His instruction to care for those less fortunate. For an Atheist I would have to guess that it is public service that makes them feel good.

There was a poor old Christian lady who prayed out loud on her porch, "Lord, you know I'm broke and need groceries. Please help me!" Her atheist neighbor overheard, and decided to teach this believer a lesson.
He bought groceries, and that night sneaked them onto his neighbor’s porch and waited. When she came out, and discovered them, she of course shouted, "Thank you Lord for my groceries!" The neighbor jumped out of hiding and announced, "Aha! You see there is No Lord! I bought those groceries, not the Lord!” She immediately shot back, looking up to heaven saying, "Thank you Lord for the groceries even though You did use the devil to pay for them!"
God uses whom He chooses. A good deed is a good deed, regardless of the source used to preform it.
This question implies atheist cannot do good things. Atheist too, are made in the image of God whether they like it or not and are also moved with compassion to help those in need.

It means that the atheist is doing it out of REAL love, because he has nothing to gain.
Volunteering really isn't volunteering if you are compelled to do it by a deity willing to torture your family for eternity if they don't understand his will.
