Seriously, why are they now raving drunks, but a couple (hundred/thousand) years back they used to be one of the most feared countrys?

Drinking is much more of a cultural/societal norm and point of acceptance. My husband is British and most socializing with friends/family is done at the pub in town. I actually find it perfectly normal that I meet friends at the pub around 5-5.30 to talk and enjoy a few beers before going home for the evening. That and I really like beer.

Alcohol goes way back, if the Celts didn't have it when they were started trading China 4000 years ago they would have picked it up along the way.
Neolithic villages had meadish beer around 9000 years ago, not sure how much further it goes back.

because every social group has a stereotype its hard to imagine life without them!!
and because some of the best beers are irish

"When they discovered alcohol." That's a good one. Alcohol has been around since civilization has, and I'm pretty sure the Irish have always been hard drinkers - and anyway, hard drinkers can be pretty scary...lol.
