I believe that we are all originally atheists. A belief in God doesn't come through genes. Any belief in a higher power is a socially defined and accepted concept that gets situated in our subconciousness through interaction with other beings.
A widely percieved mistake is that Atheists do not believe in God. I am an atheist, however, the definition of God to me doesn't reside in a Bible, Koran, Tora or any other "written material". I don't want to define God in order not offend anyone here, since I do support the freedom of belief.
To answer your question ----> the mere idea that some power whether it is holy or evil is in control of my life does not make sense to me. I am my own being who is capable of creating, or destructing my life as well as lives of others. I do not like the idea of Heaven or Hell since that creates a bias within the human brain based on fear. Judgment based on fear is not always the best judgement.
I can go on explaining how Heaven and Hell do not exist based on the very religious descriptions, however, this is not the topic nor the time for it.
I hope this answer helped you somehow.
Thanks

Well, I don't believe in a god named God now, and never have, but I am a former atheist, and I was born one. From the moment I first heard about God, I was certain I did not believe in him, and that actually hasn't changed. Now, however, I do not make the mistake of equating the impossible Christian god with the probable other gods.

I'm still an atheist, but I think some of the Vile Temptresses are responsible for leading believers astray.

Depression, logical thinking, scepticism. Then I met my boyfriend and started believing again after talking to him about his religion (Christianity). But he lost out after all; I'm now Quaker, not Christian, and he's now stuck having philosophical discussions with me all day!

Some people reach a rebellious stage in their life and like to play Atheist for awhile. Then they begin to dread the consequences if they are wrong and become a born again bible thumping Christian.

I was lonely, I was scared, I had no direction, my life was choatic
and then I found God
He gave me the benefit of the doubt when I screwed up again and again and again...
Mercy and grace like that I've never experienced from any human being before

I lost faith in the Christianity. I became theistic again when I discovered God wasn't what society dictated.
Though my car seemingly driving itself to avoid an accident was also quite a convincing experience.
