I lead by example, that's the only way it'll work. You can't tell your kid not to smoke and then you do it.

My kids are 5 and 2 only tho, so I have a way to go but I lead by example; having healthy food, and when they do eat a treat it's just that a treat and you can get one and I follow suit. As far as reading goes, I read myself and read to them and they've adopted those habits. I'm a social drinker, not a drunk and im hoping that shows them the responsible way to drink, it worked for me with my parents doing that to us. I'm a runner and my kids are active walkers. Best way is show them by leading them the way.

I stopped drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes before I adopted my first child. I tried to feed them well balanced meals and got them out for exercise instead of letting them sit for hours in front of the tv.

Children copy our actions, not just our words. If you say "don't drink and drive" then get arrested for a "DUI" they will know what you really think!
