People tuna. My cat loves albacore tune but she won't eat regular tuna. She doesn't like wet cat food either.

I only give her tuna if I am making a tuna sandwich for myself. She eats dry cat food most of the time.

Tuna is ok, as a treat - not as a meal.

I have heard concerns regarding mercury levels in fish, some have stated it is more dangerous for cats than people. I'm not sure if this is true. Though in excess, it's dangerous to anyone.

The real concern is not salt, but unsaturated fats. Tuna and other fish lack Vitamin E, needed to metabolize the fats. A mix of unsaturated fats and vitamin E deficiency can cause yellow fat disease (steatitis).

In addition:

"Yellow fat disease occurs most commonly in young, overweight male and female cats with inappropriate diets. Treatment includes discontinuing the inappropriate diet and administering therapeutic doses of vitamin E. Corticosteroids may also be prescribed to relieve the inflammatory response.

Even if a tuna-fed cat receives prophylactic or supplemental doses of vitamin E, there are other problems besides steatitis that make feeding tuna unwise. Some believe that tuna contains specific substances (allergens) that stimulate allergic-like disorders in cats. Cats should be fed a balanced, commercially prepared diet to avoid these problems."

And yes, since the albacore is less fatty, it probably is better than the regular stuff.

A little now and then won't hurt, but it - like most fish - has magnesium and that is hard on a cat's kidneys. If your cat likes albacore tuna, try some plain chicken breast. It's healthier for your cat and they often don't know the difference.

Using any human canned meat (tune, salmon, chicken, etc) is not a good idea for cats. Because the meat is cooked the taurine has been lost in that process. Taurine is an ESSENTIAL amino acid for cats. It is added to all commercial cat foods.

Tuna is a very addictive food for cats and long-term use of it leads to serious vitamin defiencies in cats.

I hope that information causes you to reconsider your use of it. Your cat will eat what you provide for her. Don't let her become "finicky" about it. You care in charge of her diet.
