My parrot, 25yrs., got caught in a mouse glue trap yesterday. When I found her, it was attached to her right wing as she tried to climb her cage. Severe trauma, loss of round patch of chest feathers, tail feathers, and some right wing feathers resulted. She has weakness, loss of appetite and will not let anyone near her, not even my aunt whom she is normally excited to see. The nearest vet is 80 miles away and due to illness, both the bird and I are unable to travel.

I need good advice in a hurry.

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE YOUR BIRD ANY ALCOHOL and anyone who would suggest such a thing with a bird experiencing shock and trauma like this needs to do some research (to state it nicely).

Oh my. Unfortunately, you are going to need to make the trip to the vet to safe your babies life. At least call the vet and ask them what you should do. You are most likely going to need to make the trip, as hard as it will be on you. If you can't do it, ask your aunt or a friend to take your baby for you.

In the mean time, create a "hospital cage" for her. Use a clear reptile carrier, or a medium sized storage container and cover the top PARTIALLY with a towel to create darkness. The key is to keep her warm (use a heating pad on the outside bottom of the cage or hot water bottles covered with towels so she doesn't have direct access to the heat in the bottles). Line the bottom with towels to create cushion and keep small bowls of food and water in with her.

As ill as you may be, getting her to the vet is going to make the difference between her surviving this or not. The glue used in those traps could very well be toxic to her and nothing you can do at home will successfully treat her with that. Also, that stuff needs to be removed and her wounds treated and since she won't let you near her, the vet will have to take care of that. The shock she's going through needs to be treated by a vet as well.

At the very least, call your avian vet. If you cannot take her in, or find someone to do it for you, perhaps ask them if they will make a housecall (explain your situation) and come and treat her at home.

I wish you the very best and will pray for your baby.

First off get her in a calm stting and ither use a heat lamp or a heating pad. Get ehr warm and keep her quiet. Try and make come birdie breador mashpedup pasta with seed and veggies with egg shells. Type in birdiebook book and find something that is moist and high in calories. She will need to eat soon, a bird's matoblism is very high meaning they need to eat often. Plus a warmer food will keep her calm and also keep her temperature from dropping too low.

You're best bet is to mvoe her perches lower on the cage and have the water bowl on the bottom for easy access. For nwo use daw(A small amount) to gently washteh areas where the glue is on her skin. The feathers could grow back but if sheingests the glue she could get very ill and possibly die. After a gentle rinse spray her with some water with pure aloe gel in it.

Other than that, please if you can at elast call the avian vets for more detailed instructions in what to do for her, and if you can get someone to take her up there. Anyone. But her best bet for happy golden years is to see an avian vet. It is likely it is the stress causing her weakness, so kep her in a dim room, with no loud noises and keep her warm. That should help get rid of some of the weakness.

Wow, the feathers will grow back in, but for now you need to keep the bird calm and relaxed for the time being. Keep this bird in a completely dark (pitch black) room. This will keep the bird from picking at any remaining glue that has been left on the bird and ingesting it until it calms completely down.

The weakness is from the stress of what it's been through and will return in a few hours once it calms down, along with the appetite.

Once you see the bird coming around you can start checking for signs of glue which can be removed with vegetable oil in small amounts.

I hope this advice helps you and the bird is ok and less stressed then when i read this post!!

Chamomile tea ,cooled should calm her for now but your bird is traumatized and I hope you are able to get her to the vet soon. There are also a lot of remedies good to have on hand available online that you can order to create an Emergency Kit for stressed out bird ,or who are weak and upset.Put a towel on her all the while talking to her gently so that you can spoon feed her some of the tea.Keep her warm and quiet,If you have a warming light that would also help her a lot.If not place a blanket on her cage in a warm spot and dont let anyone disturb her for now.Let us all know what happens.

I work for an emergency vet hospital, but we don't see avians. However, I have owned them for a good many years. I would not stress her out right now by bathing her. I would keep her in a warm, quiet place. Maybe a bit of soft music & some millet or her favorite food. I don't think a dark room would be best because she may feel more comfortable w/ her normal surroundings. Also, NO ALCOHOL! If she seems more calm by morning, maybe try washing her w/ a bit of dawn dish soap, but rinse her off well. If she starts to puff up & sit at the bottom of the cage, YOU NEED TO GET TO AN AVIAN VET ASAP! Please keep us informed. Hugs, Clare

Keep your bird in familiar sourroundings. Keep it warm, not hot. Offer favorite food, I hope your bird is not a picky eater.
Keep the birds stress level low. Hand feed to encourage eating. Birds have little fat reserve and must eat often.
My experience with vets has usually been, drop off the animal, they put it in a cold cage, call me after the animal has died and send me a large bill. When I ask, was the animal kept warm, hand fed etc, the reply usually is, we are too busy for that. It is difficult to find a very good vet.

look the best thing to do is not to worry she will calm down in her own time, it was a frightening experience for her. as far as the feathers they will grow back in time accidents happen. make sure their is not any glue on her other feathers if there is use mineral oil or dawn soap to get it off their both non toxic to birds and remove sticky or oily substances i would start with mineral oil though and just stroke the feathers gently with some on your hands or a cloth. but for now Waite until she has cal mes down and comfortable with you touching her before you try anything. stress is the worst thing for birds so be patient and she should be fine. good luck

Heat and quiet. Do everything these people tell you to care for your own bird. She will survive this.

Glue traps are INHUMANE. As you now know. They should not be legal. A quick kill is humane - a long painful death is not.

Anyway, I would get her some Rescue Remedy from the health food store and rub it on her beak.

The bird is in SHOCK. RR will help as will heat and quiet.

Get RID of the inhumane traps.

Crap- once a bird is actually revealing illness, it's pretty sick.
Keep her warm, keep her cage 1/2 to 3/4 covered, offer favorite foods, and try a SMALL amount of brandy mixed with water via eyedropper- it may break the mood-cycle your bird is in. Sometimes once a bird gets depressed it can't 'get over it' and instead just continues downhill unless distracted enough to "forget" the depression.
I was going to recommend those "Rescue Remedy" drops, but it sounds like you're far from a place where you could get the drops, and I think it's alcohol-based, anyway.
