I come from a religious background.
I think there are a higher amount of Atheists with religious backgrounds on this forum because we need to talk about it more than Atheists that weren't brought up that way.
I feel empathy for Christians struggling to find the will of God, and at the same time condemning others to hell, because I used to have the same problems.
I want them to know life can be better and much more rewarding away from the destructive beliefs propagated by religion.
So I answer questions in R&S.
That and I am trying to do my part to keep my kids safe from religious violence in the future.

Hard to say. Many people become atheists/ agnostics as a reaction to feeling smothered by a rigid belief system. I come from a fairly devout Catholic family, but luckily for me, my parents believe strongly in allowing their kids to make up their own minds -- even where religion is concerned. I'm very familiar with Catholicism, I practiced that religion quite earnestly, and I didn't really start challenging it until I was about 12. I didn't stop going to church until I was 16 or so. My younger brother, on the other hand, has only been in a church a handful of times in his life, and as far as I know, never even considered believing in God. Atheism came quite naturally to him.

I'll reply from the feminine similar - is it viable to elevate healthful daughters with out a feminine function mannequin within the dwelling? I wouldn't have a dependable mom. Thankfully, I had an overly loving and dependable father, who did the whole lot he would to fill each the moms and dads function. I characteristic the whole lot well I have and the entire well matters that I am to his educating and steerage. I do regard myself as mentally and morally healthful. But I am no longer what one might regard as a usual lady. No one taught me the fundamentals of being feminine - find out how to practice make-up, revel in searching and garments and so forth and so forth. I haven't any curiosity in those locations. I'm no longer troubled by way of that however folks who understand me ordinarily ask whether or not I wouldn't have a mom, or did I develop up in a loved ones with plenty of brothers. A trainer or loved ones pal is not ample in a few locations. You want anybody who's within the condo and able to advisor you whilst imperative.

My folks are churchy types but all 4 of us kids are atheists. It started with one brother, the scientist (now a doc), who impressed upon me that religion was all crap. And that made sense to me because I never understood what all that stuff was at church. I would cry if I had to go. Always wondered why my mom came back from up front smelling like booze. See, it makes no sense. You can't tell me that sipping some wine has anything to do with blood of Christ or crackers are the body of Christ, when they just came from the grocery store like everything else. It's all just playing make believe!

I would think it would be on a reverse bell curve, with most coming from the ends of the spectrum. I have met and spoken with so many people who grew up in a very strong religious dogma and was their reason for leaving that faith.

I was only raised religious until about age 6. After that, I no longer went to church. And I didn't really think about god(s) much. Education cured me of any lingering theistic tendancies I had.

I think anyone with half a brain who sits here and reads R&S for 5 minutes will become an atheist.

I think religious backgrounds make such choices much harder to accept. My family is deeply religious, and I was frightened when I first started questioning faith.
