Depends on what you need it for, what you pay for it, how many miles, type of car, owner.

I say not so.

Depends. What kind of car it is, how many miles are on it, how well maintained it was, how much it costs, and how good you are with cars all make it possible that a 10-year-old car might be an excellent purchase. All cars are not created the same. Check out Consumer Report's car guide for information on the reliability of the car in question. You'll find that some cars actually are not too shabby, even at 10-years. Even then, however, it depends on the car and its condition.

Car fax it go to kbb.com look up how much the car should be sold for then don't pay any more for it. It does matter what the shape of the car is; 10 yrs is not that long but it still could be trashed. If the mileage is high its up to you but I'm not interested if the mileage is ridiculous, check the body, interior, look under the front see if there is any oil leaks, but really it is up to you, let a mcechanic look, a mechanic that you trust because other mechanics will just "look" to take your money. Make sure you can find parts for it incase something happens. If the seller won't let you test drive it; walk away, and also make sure you look around cause there could be a better used vehicle for the same price or less, just be careful.

Its not that it might not be a smart decision, but that you just want to make sure that you have it thoroughly checked before purchasing and you want a full and detailed report of the cars service history. Without these it wouldn't be a good decision. With age comes a bigger probability that something will happen to it and you no longer have a warranty and therefore for each repair you would be paying out of pocket. So just make sure before you buy it that it is in good running condition.
After all some of the nicest cars ever made are over 10 years old and you still see avid lovers buying them.

Not true.

You can get a good or bad car whether it's brand new, fresh off the dealership, or been around for 10+ years.

If you are considering buying an older vehicle and unsure of the history, get a mechanic to check it out for you. It should cost around $50 but it will save you a lot of headaches. If it's an American car, also get a vehicle history report (carfax, et al) which will generally help to uncover red flags such as if the car was totalled/wrecked, etc.

The real question is, should I do my homework before buying a car? The answer is most definitely yes.

Only if the car hasn't been maintained properly. Both my cars are over 15 yrs old as is my motorcycle and all run and drive just fine. If the seller has all maintenance records then it's probably a safe bet the car's been taken care of. Personally I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 10 yr old Honda or Toyota as they are as reliable as the sun.

Is a VW Bus considered a cool car for a teen's first car? -YES!! You would be the coolest kid at any school if you got one! Are they fun/easy to drive? -Eh. Yes they are very fun, but easy? Not so much. Most are stick shift and it is very tough to shift a car from the 60's. Are they safe? -No. No air bags, and there is almost no front end. Therefore, if you got in a head on crash, you would lose your legs. Are they fast/quick? -NO!! Top speed is 70 if youre lucky, and it takes FOREVER to get it going that fast. Overall, if your parents will let you get it, do buy it. You dont need to be going that fast, but it is a bit dangerous. Have fun in your VW!

IT WILL DEPEND ON JUST HOW WELL IT WAS MAINTAINED, HOW MANY OWNERS IT HAD, HOW IT WAS DRIVEN, ACCIDENTS AND MAKE AND MODEL.

I HAVE CHECKED OUT HUNDREDS OF VEHICLES FOR MY CUSTOMERS THAT WERE 10 YEARS OLD OR OLDER AND A LOT OF THEM ARE STILL ON THE ROAD.

SO TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION "YES AND NO".
