I am a mother of three children and it is always a great idea to bring little toys and things to keep your children busy. The coloring books and crayons are an awesome easy idea. However the parents of the children when going somewhere like this would normally get a babysitter because it is your day and an adult setting. If they are unable to and do bring the children they the parents will keep them entertained and should bring things like that. I really think everything will work out! The kids will be very interested by the excitement of the dancing and eating! You guys will have a blast and everyone else will too. have a great day and don't let these little details stress you. It will all fall together and be awesome!! congrats!

We had a similar table at my grand parents 50th wedding anniversary reception. No one will be hurt because the kids know that the crayons and books aren't their personal property. They should be free to take out the page of their choice and color it. If you want you can have them display their work on a bulletin board or portion of a wall. Take their picture with their work and send it to them after the party. Put the crayons (NO markers!) in a several empty margarine tubs. The kids will pass them back and forth as they need the colors.
I would suggest leaving it at coloring. No cutting or glue need be involved. The kids will accept what is available and leave it at that. You may want to think about an older (13-15) kid(s) to supervise the activiity table and the hanging of the pictures.
This is a great way to keep the kids occupied and everyone has a great time.

If you aren't having too many kids, you could make a little basket up for each person containing 1 coloring book, 1 box of 12 crayons, maybe a little candy treat, some colored paper, and a stuffed animal or something. It would be a good idea to keep them entertained, and their parents will love you for it! Look at the dollar store, they don't have to cost a lot. Don't tell your fiance about it if it doesn't affect him, and he will throw a fit. Just buy the stuff yourself and let your maid of honor take care of the rest.

Hi and congratulations!
Every wedding that I have been to where this was done....it was a HUGE hit. You can even make a "kids table" ....cover it with a paper tablecloth so that if crayons get on it ....no big deal. I think that's a great idea. You don't need to order anything. Simply go to any dollar store or a discount store like Walmart and get things. Simply buy a bunch of coloring books and crayons. Dump out all the crayons and put them in little baskets or pails...then they don't have to "hog" the crayon box. You can even get some of those hand held small games (little Etch-A-Sketch), etc. Kids will learn to take turns if there is not enough of one thing.
Great idea...good luck!

It's funny that you brought that up. We recently went to a distant relatives reception and in the corner they had a kids table. It had a bunch of color and activity books, boxes of crayons and colored pencils. They also had a box of Hersheys chocolate bars there as well.
It seemed to be a big hit at this wedding and the kids were actually using it. Up until the music started and the kids were the only ones on the dance floor. It was quite cute actually.
I think it is a great idea and they wont get hurt.

Kids get bored with crayons very easily. Maybe hire some college kids to come to the party to entertain the kids? That way the parents dont have to worry about them, the kids have supervision and the "bbsitter" can keep them busy. They can plan games and activities that will not be noticed by any of your guests.

How about those Crayola Color Wonders, they are no mess, because the colors only show on the special paper that comes with the pack. Foam stickers. Scribblets.
Maybe a small TV or portable dual screen DVD player for the kids to watch or game to play.
I got married during the NFL Playoffs game. After dinner, one by one, the men stood up and left the room. We didnt know why until we saw them down the hall with a small tv on the game.
Maybe you can rent a small room next to your reception just for the kids to hang out in. Hire some sitters to organize games for them?

most kids will have fun just being around so many people.
don't forget many are older and love to watch the kids at play which is another dream come true for kids, being the center of attention - at least during the reception.
If you have a long church service and young children will be attending with their families, you might ask the church to set up a room for the children to be located during that time. they may ask a chuch employee to watch them or one of the younger teens might want to volunteer.
the kids will be dancing and eating and running around having fun on their own, plus the parents/ families of these kids will make sure they bring something if they know their child needs it.
you may call families with young children and ask what they have in mind and ask if they think you should have some type of activity for the children.
don't forget, they will be running with these crayons and someone might slip on them and break a leg.

I love your idea of keeping the kids entertained and including them in your wedding.
Try going one step further.
Hire a baby sitter-an adult is best.
Have her all set in a hallway or a room next to the reception and arm her with games, coloring books and even quiet videos.
This will be a G-d send for the parents.
I love seeing kids at weddings. It is a family event !
Congratulations and good luck.

My daughter printed a stack of wedding related coloring pictures including some that boys would like though 95% of the kids invited were girls. She got boxes of 8 crayons on sale and had enough for every kid that might be coming. It was a huge hit. She also had a menu just for them. PB &J, hot dogs, mac and cheese. Before the bridal bouquet toss she had a teddy bear toss and she "tossed" five or six teddy bears. The kids that caught them got a bigger one and all the others got a smaller one. A lot of thoise kids are teens or almost teens now and they still talk about the fun they had.
