first of all what year is it? they had a lot of transfer pump and injector pumps on the old body style (01,02, 03) if its older than that they was a wiring problem for the trans, there was also an update to the controller for what is called gear-hunting where the torque converter isnt locking up as its supposed too. also the air filter on the diesel can get sooo dirty it quits drawing air and sucks itself down into the turbo. so first decide if its the engine or the trans, then take it to the dealer because they are the ones qualified to work on this truck( or a certified diesel tech)

the single most likely cause of this is the accelerator pedal position sensor (apps). the resistor contact inside gets worn, and there will be very slight voltage spikes in the signal back to the controller. the controller thinks you are accelleratin, so it unlocks the torque convertor clutch. this is very common on diesels and gas trucks, but more expensive to fix on a cummins because the sensor comes in a box with that bug blue C on it. someone with a scanner that shows live data can drive it to verify what is wrong.

You didn't say what year. Back in the early to mid 90's Dodge had problems with the throttle position sensor. It would make the trans. go out of overdrive back into 3'rd and back into overdrive. We changed the sensor then to solve the problem.
