You do not need Microsoft Office--it is quite expensive. Do a search online for Open Office. This is a free program that will allow you to type documents, do spreadsheets, presentations and all kinds of stuff. If all you want to do is documents, use Word Pad--look under: START-Programs-Accessories--Word Pad. Lets ya type documents but has none of the glitz and junk that Word has. Microsoft is a company that makes operating systems and software. Your computer already has an operating system called Windows on it. This allows you to communicate with the computer using the mouse and keyboard. The different programs are able to run on Windows--much like different power tools are able to run on electricity. Have fun playing around and don't be too worried about everything. Computers are about 10,000 times easier to use and fix today than they were 10 years ago. I see too many people worried they're going to mess something up. Explore and enjoy! Ask a junior high kid to help you if you have any questions--it is good for kids to help.

Ditto OpenOffice: it's free. The idea there is, you can use it to get an idea of "what it's like," to pick up basic computer skills. Part of OpenOffice lets you build documents. OpenOffice is a set of programs that work together, and pass info back and forth, to manage office tasks. Microsoft home is a less expensive set of programs than office, and both do the same sorts of things as OpenOffice. You'd learn the same SKILLS in any. Again, OpenOffice is free. And easy to use. Go for it.
(If you DO end up going for Microsoft Office...just because "everyone else" does ... you think ... then go for the Personal Trainer series of books published by OReilly! A real help!)

Microsoft is a very large software company that develops a lot of software in addition to the Windows Operating System. What product are you looking at? If you're a bit more specific we might be able to better answer your questions. In most cases, you will only need the home products if you don't need the additional functionality provided in the business products (Which it does not sound like you do need).

I hope that helps.
