Six can be a tough age to shop for, they still want and play with toys but at the same time are starting to want "big-girl" things. For a gift that is different I would stay away from the big toy stores and go to one of the smaller ones like Imaginarium. Lots of the tings they carry are both fun and educational. And despite what others may say or what the media presents, girls are just as interested in science, bugs, dinosaurs, rockets as boys are. It's a stereotype that is slowly changing.

books! Maybe a begginers knitting book, a pair of knitting needles and 2 skeins of yarn (enough to make a scarf) or DK Eyewitness books, fun AND educational.

Go to a craft store & get a crafting kit for kids. They have all different kinds for all different age groups like knitting, scrapbooking, beading, jewlery making etc.

Something she can make like a jewelry box kit to paint and decorate, a set of beads to make necklaces and bracelets, or a craft foam set.

Jewlerly, earrings, and such...they can never have too many of those. Or fashionable accessories or fashionable toy accessories. Can't have too many of those for a huge collection either...
