The pay is not the same in my area. Cops make more.

Corrections work in a controlled environment, so that could arguably be called safer... however, they deal with convicted criminals. Not sure that is safer.

Cops are in an uncontrolled environment, which could be unsafe, but they deal with numerous persons who are not criminals, that could be safer.

As far as which I think is better... I would prefer being on patrol... there is much more variety, and much more freedom of movement. One of the reasons I don't get bored with my job is because I never know what may happen next.

Corrections is more of a structured, predictable environment. For me, it would tend to get boring at times.

And from a safety standpoint, and officer has much more equipment to keep him safe, including a firearm. Corrections has limited weapons, and no deadly force.

how do you get the idea of being locked in a building, with no way out, with 100 people that hate you, and have a ratio of 10 vs 1 is safer?

The pay is not the same, police officers make more money. I have been in both professions and much rather be on the street in a patrol car with a gun I can fight back with. I didn't care for the idea that if inmates wanted to riot they could take my only weapon I had, my radio, and overtake the place.

You should try to get whatever job you think you would enjoy most. I would consider trying to become a patrol officer. Try to do some ride-alongs with some police departments if you can. There are many law enforcement officer jobs that might interest you. Consider local, state, and federal jobs. Law enforcement officer pay varies, sometimes a lot, depending on the law enforcement agency. Law enforcement officer pay can also depend on things such as years of service, rank, how much education an officer has, and overtime. When considering pay, you should also consider benefits and cost of living.
