I sell cars, and I am very honest. In fact, most salespeople are very honest because if they are not, they will be fired by their manager. Times are different now for salespeople than 20 years ago. If you are not honest, then you won't have a job. But answer me this; Why do customers LIE to me all of the time. They lie to me about why they are trading their car in (when their car has a bad tranny) . They lie to me about a "better deal" they found somewhere else when in fact there wasn't. They lie to me about supposed problems with a car in my inventory and then when I ask them to show me (there is no problem). They lie to me when they say "We'll be back, we are very interested" and I never hear from them again. If there is anyone out there who has no respect for a car-salesman, you need to reevaluate and ask yourself. "WHY?" At what point were you lied to and when exactly did they MAKE you buy a car. And "if" they lied to you why didn't you tell their manager?

Not as many as the buyer! Strangely, dealers don't want to play games, but customers do! The dealer wants to sell the car for MSRP minus the rebates that apply on the vehicle. ITS NOT A SECRET! Cars dealers are in the business to make money stupid "tricks" mentioned by others have all been done before, and if you think you're smarter than people who negotiate on cars for a living, the only person you're fooling is yourself. Find a salesperson you feel comfortable with and make the best of it ! The bottom line is the car will always be more than you want, the payments will be too high and your trade in isn't worth close to the imaginary number you've made up in your head! NEW CARS COST MONEY and a good deal is not to be judged by how much the dealer made or didn't, but if you are happy with your experience and the new car itself! If you want to be ripped off sign up for a credit card or car insurance or buy a new home !

So what if car salespeople don't lie. My experience is they do whatever else possible to make the sale. The number of times a car salesperson has FAILED to answer my question in order to make a car sound like a better deal.... Last time I bought a car I asked about safety features and the breaks. The car salesman ended up talking about the cup holders. If I wanted to know about the cup holders, I would have asked. Another dealer did the same thing when I asked about safety features. Simple yes/no answers to my questions were ignored in favour of diversion. I always want to let them finish their garble and say "I take that as a No, it's not a feature."
So, yes. If car salespeople don't get my respect and have high pressure tactics, yes, expect to be lied to by customers.

I bought a car from a man my dad called "the most honest car salesman in the world" -- what a joke! Too bad I didn't realize that it was indeed a joke, and bought a car from him. I learned a hard lesson: the muffler had been spray painted to appear new, and to hide all the holes in it; the radiator was shot and had some kind of temporary stuff in it to keep it from leaking; the transmission was shot .... oh, I could go on and on, but am sure you get the picture.
A few months after my purchase, the guy was sent to prison. No, I am not joking or exaggerating, he really was sent to prison.
My experience is just a drop in the bucket -- and that is why people don't believe a word coming out of a car salesman's mouth. And perhaps one reason why some people have no qualms about lying to car salesmen.

Customers lie for a variety of reasons, but most obvious is because they care for the salesman's feelings (like salesmen don't understand rejection). Instead of just saying NO and having that be that.. they beat around the bush throwing up objection after objection but never actually saying they arn't interested.
They'll use poor ways of getting out of the conversation such as "may I have your card" or "I'll be back, this is very interesting" or "I like that, can I get it later?" but this is a ruse to escape the conversation without having to commit one way or another.

Lots. I got suckered into paying full price on the extended warranty. Later, I found out I could have gotten a better price somewhere else. Car dealers suck :p

I don't think it as much about lying as it is about sales pressure, Think of it as interrogation. The more the car salesman tries to sell me something, the more I want to leave and will tell him anything to get out of the dealership.

LOL you must be pulling my leg, because I have never met an honest car salesperson. Perhaps it is something in the water or the air.
