It depends on how badly you want the job. If you really need a job you might reply; "I need to know more about the job and would really like an interview. I want to be a bargain." If you're just looking for another, better job you might reply: "My present salary is $xxxx". Since you are talking to a recruiter, he/she is probably not the one with an opening. Good luck. Be a bargain :)

Research. There are plenty of websites and government publications that can give you an idea of the salary range for any position. Try Salary.com. It's a start. Good luck!

I would not give an exact figure; if I had to say something I would tell them a “more than” number. Figure out the lowest you will take for the job, lets say 50k and tell them that it would have to be more then 50k for you to think about taking the job. Try and have them tell you what the job is warranted first.

The best way to answer this question is to offer a "range". Make sure the range is reasonable and that it's relevant to the industry/position you are applying for and your experience.

Give a range, and say "it depends on benefits, and on the future opportunities the job offers."
