A good dentist will make sure this is a comfortable procedure. He will numb you up real good so you don't feel anything. Now let me explain a root canal to you as I would to my patients. They make a small opening on the top of the tooth so they can have access to the roots of the tooth. The go into the tooth with small files to clean out the infection in the tooth and remove the nerves. They will place a rubber dam on the tooth, which is a sheet of latex that will allow only the one tooth they are working on to stick out. This serves as a barrier so they can keep the tooth dry and keep the stuff they clean the tooth out with out your mouth. Once the infection and nerves are removed they will take measurements on how long each root is because the will have to refill the areas where the nerve once was. They fill those areas in with plugs and then place a filling in the tooth to cover the hole they made to have access. If you start to feel anything during the procedure let your dentist know. Again, a good dentist will make sure you stay numb and don't feel anything. Hope everything goes well.

It is not really painful I just had one and the prior pain was way worse. They will numb you which you may have had done before in dental work, (that can be a little painful) but after that you can't really feel anything the first thing they do is take out the nerve so it won't even hurt afterwards.
EDIT
However you might want to go to a specialist of root canal (endodontics?) I had one and the tool broke off into my gums, it cannot even be removed by an endo it is still in there (i have xray copy) you can see it on the xray. Crazy. But it still didn't hurt.

A root canal is not as painful as the pain of not having one if you are in need of one. The Dentist will either numb you or put you under (gas) to do it, and you won't feel much more than tugging and being somewhat uncomfortable for a while. The root of a tooth is completely removed, and there will be no pain or feeling in that tooth.

The most painful part of the process is that you have to have your mouth opened for a while. Try taking some Advil before your root canal. Don't let anybody scare you out of doing it. It's worth saving your tooth .

no its not painful treatment
basically first your dentist will you give local anesthesia (its a small prick and it is almost painless in mouth)
so when all area of your teeth anesthetize you will not having any "pain feeling"
you will know that some procedure is going on but not feeling "pain"
basically Root canal procedure is a simple procedure
our teeth have pulp made up of small vessels
this all resides in ROOT CANAL
so dentist will remove all nerves and vessels and will make canal wide and free off germs
when whole canal will become free of any LIVE things dentist will fill that canal with special filling material
and that's all your root canal will over
so its simple and painless so don't worry and
KEEP SMILING

Didn't the dentist tell you anything about the procedure?
Depending on which tooth/teeth are involved, you are lokking at 2, maybe 3 days of various degrees of pain and discomfort
to your mouth, and possible life-time of slight discomfort to area of the new canal!

they drill a hole in your tooth, they remove all the nerves so that it won't hurt anymore, they fill it in and put a tooth colored crown on it, just make sure they give enough pain meds during and for later... oh and just so you know they really aren't that good of an idea to get, for one they are only supposed to last like 5 years then you are supposed to get them removed and another thing is that it can become abcessed which means that the gum pulls away from the tooth(because it see's the tooth as dead) and bacteria sets in causing as infection...

I've had eight root canals in my life, and it has never gotten easy or painless, so I have sworn never to have another, would much rather have the tooth pulled.
