I don't think it is because lights will not work in a freezer. I think it is because the lights create heat when they are on, and this causes problems. First it reduces the temperature of the cabinet, and second it creates condensation and frost problems.

It has been suggested that the freezing temperatures would harm the light, or that the freezer is small enough that it does not NEED a light. On the other hand, if you check around out there, there are freezers that DO have lights, now.

The question should be why is there a light in the fridge? Does the food need to see when you close the door?

I think it is because it isn't as big so you shouldn't need the light. Or maybe the lightbulb would freeze.
