I noticed that an earlier question asked about how to tell when we're led by the Holy Spirit. A good question, certainly. But many --- if not *most* of the Christians who answered said, "Oh, there's no way you won't know. I was slain in the Spirit (or subsitute anything you like here, you know the drill) and I knew." But what of the more common, more daily leadings? I don't always find them to be so obvious.

For example, I think we all know the story of Elijah, the earthquake, the mighty wind and the 'still small voice' from 1 Kings 19.

Am I missing something here, fellow Christians? Please do keep in mind that I am fully on board with the moves of the Holy Spirit and am not trying to discount anyone's experiences --- rather that I just think these *are* more the exception rather than the rule. Am I incorrect?

Christians: I am not asking which is more common or implying that the Spirit doesn't move in marvelous ways often. I am asking about the more common, daily leadings of the Spirit --- what happens to us all, hopefully daily!

Well I'd have to say it's by that still small voice on the inside. It lines up with the Spirit of the scriptures. The Holy Spirit will never lead us to do something that goes against the written word, no matter how much we'd wish He would at times.

Sometimes God will bring other confirmations for us if we pray for them. Perhaps, advice from a wise pastor or friend or open doors when all others close. Sometimes, He will lead us via a Supernatural experience like a prophetic word from someone who knows nothing of our situation. But this isn't as common because much of the Church in America hasn't accepted this option...yet.
So I'd have to say, council from others, circumstances and that still small voice. He can even give us a scripture verse that becomes alive while we're praying about a decision.
Having an inner peace can play a role in many decisions but not always. Sometimes we don't want to move out of our comfort zone and so we use the excuse "I don't have a peace about it." In these times, I think council and prayer can be helpful.
He leads in many ways. He knows how to get the message to us. He can choose any one He wants. We need to remember that He wants us to know God's will as much as we want to know it, and sometimes even much more.

I agree, but it depends on the person I think. Whoever is more willing to be used by the Spirit would probably be more inclined to have that sharp certainty than those who are doubtful (which is OK, 'I have faith but take away my unbelief')
There have been times where I've known with out a doubt that the Holy Spirit was giving me a word of knowledge/wisdom for someone, and sometimes, I didn't know for sure, and had to be still for a time.

On a daily basis, if we are continually seeking God, we will bear the fruit of the spirit. love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness. Then if we are ready to be used at any given time we will experience the more 'exceptional' gifts referenced in 1 Corinth. 12.

I think I missed the question you are referring to but my answer to someone's question about how you KNOW it is the HS leading you was this...

The HS is going to lead you the right way...not necessarily the way that 'appeases' your flesh/emotions. The HS will convict you of things (which doesnt feel good). The HS will only tell you what God says (so you arent going to get a co-signer to sin) and the HS comforts you in the understanding.

What you are talking about 'being slain in the spirit', I refer to as receiving the Baptism of The Holy Spirit as defined in Acts when people would receive it and speak in tongues. Tongues being an evidence of the Baptism. Is that evidence the exception?...I dont think so really. Tongues is basically your prayer language as I understand it. Its how your spirit talks to the Spirit of God and its unknown to your natural mind what you are saying. I had that 'slain in the Spirit' experience and it was unbelievable for me (a typically composed person)..but I didnt FEEL its leading on a daily basis till I began regularly speaking in tongues. LIke..say Im worshipping God be it at church or at home alone..and all of a sudden, english words cant really capture the length, breadth and depth of the things Im trying to say...and then I begin to speak in tongues. Its overwhelming really...I find myself weeping...not crying...weeping..my face covered with tears and my body doubles over from the......I dunno what to call it....the inability to process such power within an earthen vessel...?

The daily leadings are not as theatrical for me, like I said above...decisions, peace in the midst of things that should have me tearing my hair out...wisdom in things that are beyond my own common sense..

Jesus, during his entire ministry, was led by the Holy Spirit.

So, how can you train yourself to hear the Holy Spirit? Charles Stanley wrote a book, "The Wonderful Spirit Filled Life" where he details how to train yourself on how to listen to the leading of the spirit.

Examples of Jesus being led: The beggar at the gate that was healed by Peter and John was probably there when Jesus was in town. Yet, he was not healed by Jesus (although he certainly could have been). Why? Because it was so a greater work could be done.

That is being led by the spirit.

Another?

Lazarus was sick to the point of death. Jesus was asked to come to see Lazarus, yet Jesus waited until Lazarus was dead? Why? Being led by the Holy Spirit, Jesus waited so that a greater testimony could be made through the resurrection of Lazarus. Waiting 3 days was an even greater sign for those to see.

To both hear and recognize the Spirit isn't always easy. However, the Spirit is also the ultimate author of the Bible. The more time you spend in the Word, the easier it will be to hear and recognize the Spirit. It should also be remembered that the Spirit will NEVER say anything that is contrary to the Word.

The person led by the Spirit of God is one who teaches and lives a sacrifiial way of life; he is pure, humble and loving; he has humility, peace, mercy and sincerity; the morality he teaches is is a hard road, but leads to a new creation. He possess true doctrine and listen to those who articulate the community's teachings.

The person led by the spirit of the world teaches and lives an easy, soft way of life; he is proud, vain, arrogant and unloving; he argues from human learning and favors human passions rather than God's will, The morality he teaches is an easy road but there is nothing 'new' about it. He possess erroneous doctrine snd refuses to obey the leaders in the faith.

One who is most inclined to think he is listening to the Lord God is the least likely to be tuned into him, whereas the one who considers himself of small account, who is prepared to obey a human superior, is likely to be the one who is really listening to God.

I am cautious regarding experiential Christianity that relies on miraculous circumstances or heavy emotion. I believe that the Holy Spirit's leading can take many forms from a simple idea or caution to clear scriptural instruction or the advice of another person. (I am more likely to rely on the advice of another believer, but God will work through whomever He wishes including nonbelievers.)

i don't think that the Holy Spirit generally moves in such obvious ways now...i think that the holy spirit moves us in personal ways...certainly God opens and closes doors amazingly all the time, but a lot of times, i question a lot of the people who are "slain in the Holy Spirit"...many friends of mine who have been have shortly abandoned the faith (or at least lost their previous passionate desire to spread the Word)...but in the end, the Holy Spirit moves YOU...it's a personal thing, and i think that you will know...

If you stay close to God, he stays close to you. In your daily walk, you will know when you stray from the truth...You will get a check in your spirit..the same when you have done something particular pleasing to the Holy Spirit...You will feel a deep satisfaction. It is a daily walk,,not a one time happening....I say this from the point of view of one who is filled with the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues...a daily walk with the spirit..
