There is no real good way because every woman is fertile at different times, if you do not want to use protection for whatever reason, I would suggest using contraception foam as it doesn't feel bad, and it is not so obvious if you are trying to "hide" the fact that you are using birth control, this is a good way because it kills the spirm.

The official number is:
You most likely ovulate the 14th day, if your cycle is 28 days. (14 days before your next period starts...).
Sperm can probably survive 5 days. But, you might ovulate a day or 2 early. 14-2-5=7. Some people have said its OK up to day 9, but that's pushing it.
So you ovulate, then wait a few days in case either you're late ovulating or the egg hangs around. That takes you to about day 18. From day 18 to 28 should be "safe". Some places say from 20 to be real safe, but the thought is that the egg doesn't wait around long. if it doesn't hit sperm right away, it's toast.
There are a couple of "but..." issues.
This assumes you ovulate as per normal schedule. First, learn to recognize the change in mucus that indicates you are ovulating. This will give you a better indication what is a good time for you personally.
Second, research shows that women occasionally ovulate random times, or even twice per period. This is rare, but you will find on discussion boards like this one, many women who are sure they got pregnant at the wrong time, even during their period. VERY Unlikely, but not 100% safe.
There is a name for women who use the timing or rhythm method - they call them "mommies". It's generally felt to be about 80% effective at the best of times. Add alcohol and hormones, or sleepovers, and it's guaranteed to fail.
I suggest birth control or a wedding planner.

THERE IS NO SAFE TIME! Have you ever LOOKED at a magazine? You can get pregnant ANYTIME you have unprotected sex, hands down, no question. Sperm can live in the body for up to a week, so counting days won't do anything. Just use a condom, or some other birth control. You CANNOT have unprotected sex without risking getting pregnant. It's just not possible.

Usually it is as you said, 5-7 days after your period and 5-7 days before your next period. But it only works with very regular periods, not for irregular, and trust me, with these things, you usually forget what day it is.
I would advice you to use more than one contraceptive method at any given time since none of them are 100%, specially the condom, since it also can prevent STD.
Regards.

Ovulation is when you can get pregnant and women ovulate at different times. Most women ovulate between the 12th-16th day of their cycle (day 1 is the first day of your period). There is not an accurate answer to your question unless you buy an ovulation kit at the drugstore and test you urine to find out exactly when you ovulate. When I was trying to get pregnant, I tested and I don't ovulate until the 22nd day of my cycle (6 days before my next period). So, it depends on your body. Use protection if you don't want to get pregnant. That's the only reliable way!
