Why would an athests secretly believe in God? It's harder to be an athests because it goes against the norm. So if they believe in God, why wouldn't they make it easier upon themselves and worship Him?

I'm not willing to give up on the possibility. I've spent years upon years thinking about where I came from, thinking about spirituality, reading every religious text I can get my hands on. I meditate, and spend a lot of time thinking. I can't say I'm actively seeking a god, but it sure helps to keep one's options open, does it not? I call myself an atheist because at this time, the only reasonable conclusion I can make is that there isn't any god(s) - It's not been through lack of trying that I haven't found any.

For now, to the best of my knowledge we're here, and we're going to live and die and that's going to be it. My consciousness will cease when my brain ceases to function, at which point I'll be dead and my body will rot and nobody will remember my name after a hundred years or so. The universe will grind on. It sure would be comforting to believe that some big powerful being loves me and wants to send me to a place of eternal happiness and peace (neither of which is available to quite a large proportion of the human population of this particular hunk of rock), even if by nature I am extraordinarily ****ed up and prone to bad decisions. That'd make dealing with this life much easier - it really would. Unfortunately, the harsh reality of my conclusion is that there is no such thing, and this is all I have. Surely this makes life all the more precious for me, because I force myself to face these facts. I cherish my friendships and family ties because I know that at any instant they could be taken from me, forever.

If presented with compelling evidence to the contrary, I'll re-evaluate and come up with an updated conclusion. I'm fairly sure that you're trolling, and that I'm wasting my time by typing this, but if it helps one more person learn more about atheism, maybe it'll do some good anyway. I don't believe in any gods, and for you to suggest that I 'secretly believe' is extremely insulting, and rather delusional.

ADDENDUM: I'm really tired of the 'you /must/ believe in god because you call upon his name when you stub your toe!' argument. These are nothing more than words used to express a state of feeling. One of my favorite ways of expressing extreme irritation is a nice 'gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawd DAMNIT' - that doesn't imply that I believe in a god, just that I chose to use those words to express my feelings. I learned to use those words growing up in the society and culture that I grew up in - that's what everybody else used, so I learned to use them, too.

Yeah, right. An atheist secretly believes in God, but just says that they're an atheist, even though they "secretly" believe that God will condemn them to eternal torture for claiming to be atheist.
Makes sense.

(Rolls eyes.)

Stop projecting YOUR history of indecision on the rest of us.

What's an athest?

None. If we 'secretly' believed in god, we wouldn't be atheists. See?

This question is pointless and insulting.

Nope. True non-believer, here. Maybe even an evangelical atheist.

You caught me. I'm really a Fundamentalist Christian. Atheists just seem to get all the chicks, so I pretend to be one so they'll like me.

What's an "athest"?

Not me. And would you kindly quit looking for validation somehow through here? Find something else to do. Religion makes NO sense to me, and it never has. That's my world. Live in your own and leave me alone.
