we don't have dental insurance so are trying to find out what this is before extreme measure. my fiancee went to brush his teeth this morning and noticed a small purple/red bump on his gums above his upper teeth. He said its very sensitive, and hurts. He feels like he should pop it, but i said to wait. any ideas what this might be before running the dentist?

It is an abcess. He can pop it if he wants to, and it will probably bleed and have puss ooze out. He needs to see a dentist because and abcess only forms when a tooth is infected. The only way to heal infection in a tooth is a root canal. The only other option would be to have the tooth extracted. The root canal is a lot more expensive, but I always tell my patients it better to have your natural teeth.

I agree with previous answerer. It's sound like classic absess tooth. Unfortunately, only solution is to visit a dentist.
