I have 5 tattoo's and 2 large ones on my forearms. I know that staying out of the sun will help keep them looking good, but I had someone tell me that even if you go out in the sun as long as you put regular lotion on after being out in the sun you won't lose color. I tend to forget sunscreen (bad bad bad.) Does anyone know if the regular lotion trick is true?

I think the best part of keeping a tattoo looking lively and fresh is to take good care of it when you first get it. If you have a tattoo I'm pretty sure you've heard of 'Tattoo Goo' and this stuff works wonders in keeping your skin from peeling (cause of tattoo fading). But also you must understand that it depends on the location of the tattoo, some places are more prone to fading then others, due to normal rub from clothing. I think the foot is the worst spot because your sock rubs on your foot on a daily basis. Really once your tattoo is healed, there is really nothing you can apply to stop fading, it will naturally happen over time.

I found a link with some good information about what causes fading and how to help slow down the process.

I know exactly what you mean, I turned 18 a few months ago and always thought I'd get it the second I was allowed to. But, I made myself wait, and since I'm still unsure about my design totally, I'm telling myself to wait a little while. Since my 18th doesn't have any signifigant meaning to me, here's how I'm doing it: -Take 6 months to think of a design, perfect it, and figure out the exact placement. -After that, wait 6 more months. At the end of those months, look at my tattoo design again and see if I feel the same way. -Get a henna tattoo of what I want, where I want. Get it touched up as needed, and have it for as long as it takes to make me realize that I'm either totally in love with it, or I should reconsider. I'm NOT saying you have to do this too, but it's my own personal plan. That way, I can go through the "right" steps to deciding, and it'll pay off that much more to know that when I get it, I'll KNOW it's right. Think long and hard about your tattoo. I see nothing wrong about your design or placement, and I think it'd be a great little tattoo. I'm sure you won't regret it, and it's a place that can be covered up or shown off. Still, make sure to consider what might go wrong (you don't like it, you get old and wrinkly, etc.) Those seem very unlikely, but consider it anyway. Good luck, and if your 18th means that much to you, get it when you're absolutely positive of it. If you're not positive until after you turn 19, it's okay. The tattoo will still mean a lot regardless. <3

No, the regular lotion trick is not true. You need to remember to put sunscreen on your tattoo before you're out in the sun for any long periods of time to prevent fading. Putting lotion on your tattoo is a good idea. I usually do it about once a day. It keeps your tattoo nice and moist and looking better longer.

No, the regular lotion trick is not true. You still need sun screen. I use regular lotion with aloe on my tattoo's daily and never go into the sun without sun lotion on them. On really hot days I carry a stick of tattoo goo sun lotion, it's tiny and fits in my pocket, I reapply it every few hours and my tattoos look as good now as the day I got them (some are over ten years old).

Why spend the money on a tattoo, then not take care of it? You'll be the only one to suffer if it fades. Is it worth not taking the twenty seconds it takes to put lotion on?

Never heard about the regular lotion. Staying out of the sun is the #1 thing to prevent your tattoo from fading. Try getting one of those small sunscreen sticks that connect to your keychain. It will be harder to forget to put some on when you are in the sun. You can find them at the grocery store, drug stores, target, walmart etc....

Firstly, you should be applying a sunblock with an spf of 45 or higher to it every day. Lotion does not protect it from the sun, but it will help to keep it looking good. The protection from the sun comes from the spf. The higher the spf is, the longer you can be out in the sun, because it helps your natural melanin do its job better.

There is a website called www.slumberparties.com you can try. I can't remember the name of the spray, but it really brings out the color of anyone's tattoo..and it moisturizes the skin. I'm sure you would find it if you looked on the site.

I went to a "party" one of my friends hosted and they showed it to us there...I do not have a tattoo myself but my friend does and she really seems to like it.

a good tattoo with QUALITY ink will hold color the best!

If you are in the sun a lot, keep a high spf sun screen on it to keep fading to a minimum.
