I'm not going for flavor here. I just need to make my frosting thicker and I've run out of powdered sugar.

It MIGHT make it stiffer, but it will also make it grainy and not smooth at all if you're going for appearance.

Well If you are going to eat it don't put flour or cornstarch you need powdered sugar and since you are out use granulated in your food processor or blender w a little cornstarch this is the same as powdered sugar.

I actually just made a recipe with a cream cheese topping and it said to add flavorless gelatin. I guess that makes it more stiff?? Maybe you can try that next time.
Flour only really works to thicken when it has a chance to heat up righ away with liquids. Not really something you want to put in your frosting.

My buttercream that i make, is only made of vanilla, marshmallow fluff and butter. Its really simple and its really stiff/ thick.

Flour is not a good idea in frosting. I don't know what would work except to make it a drizzle coating or to add fruit, candy, nuts or crunchies like cereal.

The flour has to be cooked to taste good. Simply add more confectioners sugar. Even cornstarch will leave it mealy in my opinion.

Yeah, but it would taste bad. Corn starch would be better. Just go buy powdered sugar, it's cheap.

Flour will ruin it, wait for the sugar.

Well, you can use the flour to thicken it, but only if no one is going to eat it. It would taste horrible.
