HI
i am 23, female and from london. i have never known what i wanted to do with my life. my desk job is driving me insane, as i long to be doign something practical. i have been thinking about doing a handyman course as i would really like to be able to buy a property that is run down and renovate it. nothing big at first, maybe an old ladies house that needs painting, and new ktichen and bathroom. can anyone please give me some advice. i live in kingston upon thames. i don't know wether i could get a job with a handy man or builder or even a property developer who buys, renovates and sells on. i don't want people thinking i am trying to make that big elusive buck. i am willign to put the work in and training. i would be able to raise the money to buy my first project in about a year, as i have my own property already.
any help or info would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

if your serious then you can take 5 day courses in various aspects of trade work like plumbing, plastering, kitchen/bathroom fitting, painting/decorating, tiling, these are the basic ones you need forget electrics you are not allowed to touch them unless you fully qualified the same goes for gas, but the above courses should give you a starting point and you can progress from there and you will learn the right way to do things not the d.i.yer way, its down to practice you're not going to be perfect overnight it takes a while but you should be able to achieve a relatively high standard once you have finished a particular course and the better the finish on your house/project the more money you will get you can always tell if the house has been worked on by someone in the know or someone trying to blag it so get some proper training and you should do all right

good luck

Basically, any Home Renovation courses you can learn will be beneficial for your entire life, no matter what your career or chosen field ends up being. We are DIYer's and I love it. My Hubby does electrical, plumbing, tile. I like to work with wood, painting, wall treatments, decorating stuff. Yes it is fun, time consuming and most of all so very rewarding and satisfying. We both had other careers, and always and still are working on our house, and we did the same with the previous homes we have owned. You can never go wrong with learning new things...especially with those kinds of rewards.......and satisfaction.

hi, i'm in america, i'm a professional builder slash handyman
i started out knowing nothing, i just brought some books on homeremodling and then wood work

it is alot of fun, when i'm at work it's like i'm playing
mostly because i play when i'm at work, but it is dirty dirty work

i think the stuff in drywall will kill me, so is mold or the stuff in paint, or primer, i mean those things are not good to get in lungs and it's just dirty dirty work, so think long and hard, and do your research first before jumping in buying a house

you can learn to build by making small projects and watch tv that teaches you how to remodle house then hire pros to do it
